Datavant
•$164,000 - $205,000

About The Position

Datavant is a healthcare data collaboration platform focused on making health data secure, accessible, and actionable. The Director of Product Science ensures the scientific credibility and rigor of Datavant Life Sciences’ real-world evidence (RWE) and data discovery agents. Working with product and engineering stakeholders across product zones and pods, the Director ensures that agents are conceptualized, developed, and evaluated to meet the needs of internal and external scientific customers and Datavant’s scientific standards. The role applies domain knowledge and RWE expertise to develop agents and agent systems for scientific tasks. As a senior scientific leader within product teams, the Director is accountable for scientific submissions to product and roadmap governance reviews, including evaluation sets and agent-performance metrics, and serves as the subject-matter expert on relevant non-agentic scientific workflows. The Director also leads the scientific work for customer agent co-build, co-development, and co-design partnerships with pharmaceutical and data ecosystem customers. This includes accountability for the quality of contracted and delivered scientific work, such as customer-specific agentic RWE workflows, applying workflows to customer SOPs, developing agents for RWE tasks, and evaluating those agents. At the discretion of the Head of Product Science and Chief Science Officer, the Director may contribute to scientific thought leadership through blogs, webinars, and presentations at scientific meetings. The role also supports go-to-market teams by translating customer and competitor intelligence and identifying market signals.

  • Professional research experience in RWE, pharmacoepidemiology, HEOR, or a closely related field: at least 3 years after a doctorate or 6 years after a master’s degree for Director; at least 5 years after a doctorate or 8 years after a master’s degree for Senior Director.
  • Strong command of observational study design, healthcare data, and analytic methods, with the ability to assess methodological choices and interpret findings in light of study limitations.
  • Ability to drive progress across cross-functional product teams, manage competing priorities, resolve scientific and product delivery challenges, and negotiate scope and timelines.
  • Experience managing or providing matrix leadership to colleagues, including coaching and substantive feedback: at least 1 year for Director or 2 years for Senior Director.
  • Ability to apply rigorous scientific judgment to RWE product development, challenge assumptions, critically evaluate proposed features and analytic outputs, and recommend changes that strengthen scientific validity and usefulness for researchers.
  • Excellent scientific writing and communication skills, including presenting findings to scientific and non-scientific audiences.
  • Extensive experience with multiple types of healthcare data used in RWE research and familiarity with analytic tools or evidence-generation platforms such as R, Python, or Substantiate.

  • Experience developing scientific standards, study templates, quality processes, or methodological guidance used across teams.
  • Experience representing an organization as a subject-matter expert in workshops, webinars, and professional forums.
  • Record of peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, or other external scientific contributions; high-impact work for Senior Director candidates.
  • Experience leveraging AI tools, including agents or LLMs, for scientific work products and fluency in basic AI terminology.

  • Guide scientific agent conceptualization, including why an agent is needed and for whom.
  • Define scientific problem statements, agent tasks, and task boundaries.
  • Design scientific workflows and determine subject-matter-expert review and decision points.
  • Develop scientific reference sets and agent context.
  • Design and apply scientific evaluations for agents.
  • Define and execute scientific internal testing requirements.
  • Apply domain knowledge and real-world evidence expertise to the development of agents and agent systems for scientific tasks.
  • Prepare and own scientific submissions for product and roadmap governance reviews, including evaluation sets and agent-performance metrics.
  • Serve as the subject-matter expert on non-agentic scientific workflows relevant to agents and agent systems.
  • Lead scientific delivery for customer agent co-build, co-development, and co-design partnerships with pharmaceutical and data ecosystem customers.
  • Ensure the scientific quality of contracted and delivered work, including customer-specific workflows, application to customer SOPs, agent development, and agent evaluation.
