About The Position

We are currently looking for a director to lead a multi-disciplinary team dedicated to preventing workplace illness and injury in the province. The Director of Prevention Services is accountable for the management of injury and illness prevention programs and services to employers, workers and other stakeholders, and for ensuring that all prevention programs and services are coordinated, managed and delivered as efficiently and effectively as possible, within the scope of established legislation and policy. The Director also leads the development of a provincial injury and illness prevention strategy, as well as related implementation initiatives in consultation with stakeholders, to effectively control and mitigate the risk of injury and illness in the province’s workplaces. Reporting to the Vice President of Prevention and Workplace Services, this director position is a critical member of the leadership team that addresses complex social policy matters.

Requirements

  • Masters degree in Occupational Health and Safety or related discipline, preferably in social sciences.
  • Completion of a professional safety designation is required (i.e., Canadian Registered Safety Professional - CRSP, Certified Health and Safety Consultant - CHSC, Registered Industrial Hygienist - RIH, Canadian Risk Management - CRM).
  • A minimum of five years of management experience with proven leadership abilities, including skills in project and performance management, combined with excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to think strategically, analytically and use good judgement in providing oversight and identifying solutions on a broad range of complex issues.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Act and Regulations, Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, Canada Labour Code Part II, policies and procedures including an understanding of concepts and principles of workers’ compensation and their application in varying situations.
  • Strong communication skills – both oral and written.

  • Knowledge of provincial safety and economic climates, as well as the industries operating in this province, would be an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Providing advice and guidance on strategic directions for the organization while executing strategies to achieve desired results of injury and illness prevention.
  • Leading the development and execution of injury and illness prevention approaches in provincial workplaces.
  • Leading strategic programing to support workplace injury and illness prevention.
  • Involving key stakeholders, workers, employers, industry and community partners in effective relationships to advance the mandate of WorkplaceNL.
  • Developing, attracting, retaining, motivating and supervising an effective management team to achieve objectives.
  • Overseeing technology advancements (and other projects) to ensure teams are successful in integrating systems and operational practices that help modernize service delivery.
  • Creating benchmarks and setting evidence-based outcomes that mobilize teams to enhance delivery and impact change, while communicating results.
  • Adopting a continuous improvement approach to assessing and evaluating programs and services, with a focus on improving efficiency and removing non-value-added activities.
  • Travel is required.
