About The Position

SnapLogic is hiring a Director of Platform Engineering to own the platform that its services run on, including the control plane, data layer, and production operational tooling. This hands-on technical and people leader will set architectural direction, build and grow the team, and maintain enough technical depth to make informed decisions about the systems. The role includes ownership of a production and test MongoDB footprint of roughly 50 clusters and more than 60TB of data. The director will establish a roadmap balancing customer commitments, technical debt, and platform innovation, with accountability for reliability, scale, and delivery. The role partners with SRE, application teams, support, field teams, and company leadership, and serves as a credible engineering contact for customers when needed. This is a hybrid position based at SnapLogic’s San Mateo, California headquarters, with two days per week in the office.

Requirements

  • At least 10 years building and operating production backend systems, including enterprise SaaS or PaaS.
  • At least 5 years leading and managing engineering teams, including onshore and offshore teams.
  • Strong programming fundamentals, ideally in Java and/or Python, and ability to learn new languages and stacks.
  • Deep experience operating production distributed systems, including debugging, profiling, capacity planning, and incident response.
  • Track record of taking systems from design through production rollout and owning them after launch.
  • Solid understanding of relational or NoSQL databases, including query performance, indexing, and schema-design trade-offs.
  • Deep understanding of distributed systems, including HTTP protocols, distributed caching strategies, and observability.
  • Experience being accountable for an availability SLA on a customer-facing platform.
  • Hands-on experience running Kubernetes in production at scale, ideally Amazon EKS, including troubleshooting cluster, networking, and workload issues.
  • Experience with GitOps delivery, such as ArgoCD, and infrastructure as code, such as Terraform or equivalent.
  • B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Hands-on experience designing, building, and deploying AI agents to automate engineering workflows and improve developer productivity.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS, containers, and CI/CD.
  • Familiarity with observability tooling, including metrics, tracing, and structured logs, and with SRE practices.
  • Experience implementing continuous delivery and cloud deployment solutions.
  • Experience with multi-tenant public and private clouds.
  • Hands-on experience operating MongoDB or another NoSQL database at scale, including sharding, replica sets, query profiling, and index tuning.
  • Agile project and release management experience.
  • A record of accurate, fast decision-making under production pressure.

Responsibilities

  • Own SnapLogic’s control-plane services and set architectural direction for reliability, performance, and scalability across services, the data layer, and upstream dependencies.
  • Review designs for critical components, make build-versus-buy decisions, assess production-change risks, and remain hands-on through coding and code review as appropriate.
  • Develop a roadmap balancing customer commitments, technical debt, and platform innovation.
  • Lead and manage engineering teams, including hiring forecasts and budgets, recruiting, employee development, delegation of technical ownership, feedback, one-on-ones, and conflict resolution.
  • Establish team leads and empower them to mentor their reports; improve team productivity, quality, and health.
  • Be accountable for the zero-downtime SLA; drive root-cause analysis and SRE process improvements and ensure processes are followed.
  • Monitor production, engage resources before incidents cause widespread impact, and turn incidents into durable improvements through testing, observability, automation, or design changes.
  • Manage support escalations, maintain close contact with the support manager, and join customer escalation calls when needed.
  • Lead the migration of legacy EC2-based services to Kubernetes while protecting availability.
  • Own developer self-service, on-demand environments, and the internal developer portal as products.
  • Set strategy for the MongoDB fleet, including query and index tuning, schema and access-pattern reviews, shard and replica-set operations, upgrades, migrations, and capacity planning.
  • Build MongoDB expertise across the team rather than concentrating it in a few individuals.
  • Champion AI adoption throughout the software development lifecycle and use AI to improve engineering excellence, delivery speed, and product quality.
  • Design, build, and deploy AI agents that automate engineering workflows and improve developer productivity while upholding engineering, security, and quality standards.
  • Partner with application teams, SRE, support, and field teams to set and meet expectations for platform capabilities and health.
  • Translate platform work into business terms, document processes, keep the team informed, and represent engineering to customers when needed.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive benefits package for full-time employees.
  • Global wellness benefits.
  • Certain roles are eligible for annual cash bonuses or commissions.
