Director, Software Engineering

Fidelity•Westlake, TX

About The Position

Fidelity is seeking an experienced Director of Software Engineering to join its Shared Services Engineering organization, supporting Brokerage Notification and Messaging Platforms. The director will lead the design, development, and modernization of highly scalable, cloud-native, event-driven platforms, including the Event Distribution Platform and Fidelity Electronic Notification System (FENS). The role calls for a platform builder with experience delivering mission-critical, high-throughput, low-latency systems, with emphasis on extensibility, resilience, automation, and self-service capabilities. A key focus is building a configuration-driven, self-service event notification platform that lets business and engineering teams onboard events, define processing workflows, configure business rules, manage subscriptions, and introduce communication capabilities with minimal custom development. The director will also lead modernization of legacy mainframe-based event generation and notification capabilities into cloud-native architectures serving millions of Retail and Institutional Brokerage clients. The role partners with engineering executives, architects, product teams, and business and technology stakeholders to define and execute a multiyear platform strategy. It provides technical and design direction, leads and develops engineering teams, and owns platform reliability, scalability, throughput, latency, and production stability. The position also explores practical applications of AI and Generative AI in workflow creation, configuration, testing, developer productivity, and operational insights, with appropriate governance and human oversight.

Requirements

  • 12+ years of software engineering experience with significant engineering leadership experience.
  • Proven experience designing, building, and scaling enterprise platforms from scratch through production adoption.
  • Hands-on architectural expertise in high-throughput, low-latency distributed event-processing systems.
  • Deep expertise in Java, Spring Boot, Kafka, microservices, event-driven architecture, and cloud-native technologies, or comparable technologies.
  • Experience building self-service, configuration-driven, metadata-driven, or workflow-orchestration platforms.
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems, asynchronous messaging, API integration, resiliency, and scalability.
  • Working knowledge of AI, LLMs, and their practical application to engineering automation and platform capabilities.
  • Strong communication, stakeholder-management, and executive-leadership skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building large-scale event distribution, notification, messaging, or workflow platforms.
  • Experience with email, SMS, push notifications, subscriptions, and delivery orchestration.
  • Experience with mission-critical platforms in financial services, brokerage, payments, or other regulated industries.
  • Familiarity with AI agents, Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), prompt engineering, and spec-driven development.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of scalable, resilient, low-latency event processing and notification platforms.
  • Drive design for high-throughput, real-time event streaming, asynchronous processing, intelligent routing, enrichment, and multichannel notification delivery.
  • Build reusable, API-driven, configuration-based platform capabilities that support rapid onboarding and extensibility.
  • Establish engineering standards for scalability, performance, high availability, fault tolerance, and observability.
  • Build a self-service platform for event onboarding, business-rule configuration, and workflow management with minimal custom development.
  • Design workflow automation and orchestration capabilities, including conditional routing, API integrations, event transformation, retries, and error handling.
  • Apply AI and Generative AI to event onboarding, workflow creation, rule configuration, testing, and developer productivity; explore AI-powered workflow builders, intelligent recommendations, automated validation, and operational insights.
  • Ensure governance, explainability, auditability, and human oversight for AI-enabled capabilities.
  • Partner with engineering executives, architects, and product teams to define and execute a multiyear platform strategy.
  • Lead and develop engineering teams while providing technical and design direction.
  • Own platform reliability, scalability, throughput, latency, and production stability.
  • Drive performance engineering, capacity planning, incident management, and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate across business and technology teams to accelerate delivery of notification capabilities.
  • Modernize legacy mainframe-based event generation and notification capabilities into cloud-native architectures.
