The Director of the Office of National Geodetic Survey (NGS) is located within the National Ocean Service (NOS), whose mission is to provide science-based solutions through collaborative partnerships to address evolving economic, environmental, and social pressures on the Great Lakes, ocean, and coasts, supporting the broader strategic goals of the Department and NOAA. The position reports directly to the Deputy Assistant Administrator for Navigation, Observations, and Positioning, NOS. The Director provides managerial, scientific, and technical leadership to maintain the standards of excellence required of NGS programs and activities. The role leads major national programs in geodesy, photogrammetry, and related sciences, and manages the delivery and evolution of the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS), the nation's foundation for reference to latitude, longitude, height, velocity, shoreline, and gravity throughout the United States. The Director ensures that the NSRS remains consistent, accurate, timely, current, and accessible in support of public safety, economic prosperity, and environmental well-being. The NSRS includes monumented points, a network of Global Positioning System (GPS) Continuously Operating Reference Stations, and associated datasets defining geodetic datums, high-resolution geoid models, precise satellite orbits, and the national shoreline. The Director also advises NOAA leadership on resources, programs, and policy; oversees technical assistance and technology transfer; represents NOS/NOAA in interagency, national, and international forums; and directs geodetic control and mapping for selected airports. A Top Secret security clearance with access to Sensitive Compartmented Information is required.
