About The Position

The Director of Talent & People Operations leads the organization's talent acquisition, onboarding, employee relations, and workforce planning functions. This is a hands-on leadership role that partners closely with leaders across the company to build strong teams, support managers, and create a consistent employee experience throughout the employee lifecycle. This role owns the full hiring lifecycle for a high-volume, primarily seasonal workforce, from off-season pipeline building and J-1 programs through recruiting, hiring, and onboarding. The Director serves as a key HR partner to the field on employee relations, performance management, workforce planning, and people-related decisions across a remote and dispersed workforce. The Director will partner closely with managers both in the field and in the office to strengthen culture, enhance the employee experience, and enable continued growth across both corporate and the field. The Director also supervises and develops the HRBP, ensuring consistent and responsive HR support across the organization. This role is open to fully remote candidates. Candidates should be open to occasional travel for in-person meetings, visits to Under Canvas locations, and recruiting and career events (such as university career fairs and hospitality/tourism program events) as needed.

Requirements

  • 7+ years HR experience.
  • 5+ years full-cycle recruiting experience.
  • Experience with high-volume recruiting, applicant tracking systems, and recruiting metrics.
  • Experience with employee relations and investigations.
  • Multi-state employment law experience.
  • Prior supervisory experience.
  • Ability to travel occasionally, including to camp locations and recruiting and career events.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience serving as an HR business partner or senior HR generalist preferred.
  • Hospitality, tourism, seasonal recruiting experience is preferred.
  • Experience with J-1 or other international seasonal hiring programs is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead all recruiting and staffing initiatives.
  • Partner with the VP of Hospitality and Regional Directors on workforce planning and recruiting strategies for seasonal and all camp hiring.
  • Develop relationships with universities and other recruiting avenues.
  • Represent Under Canvas at university career fairs, hospitality/tourism program events, and community hiring events near camps.
  • Oversee the J-1 host employer program and sponsor partnerships with HRBP.
  • Oversee candidate sourcing, offer and onboarding processes in conjunction with HRBP.
  • Manage all corporate recruiting and interviewing needs.
  • Partner with Regional Directors on talent and succession needs.
  • Oversee building pipeline and recruitment strategy during off-season with a focus on hospitality/tourism programs, seasonal channels, local communities near the camps.
  • Manage recruiting metrics and hiring effectiveness.
  • Ensure compliance with employment laws and company policies with hiring practices.
  • Ensure ADP Applicant Tracking System is clean and up to date.
  • Partner with VP of HR to develop employer branding initiatives.
  • Partner with VP of HR, VP of Hospitality and Regional Directors to support employee relations matters, including investigations, conflict resolution, disciplinary actions, performance coaching, and employment decisions in the field.
  • Ensure consistency in policy application.
  • Work with HRBP to design and oversee onboarding programs.
  • Improve new hire retention and engagement.
  • Ensure smooth transition from candidate to employee.
  • Work with VP of HR and HRBP to develop and maintain learning and development platform.
  • Oversee Manager Toolkit, Staffing Workbook and HR SharePoint to ensure information is up to date and clean.
  • Supervise and develop the HRBP.
  • Establish priorities and workload distribution.
  • Ensure consistent HR support across all departments.
  • Act as a cultural steward, reinforcing company values and leadership expectations.
