About The Position

The director of surgical services is a senior-level position in the hospital hierarchy. They are responsible for overseeing all aspects of surgical care at their facility, including patient safety and quality of service. The director ensuring that all surgeons are following all hospital policies and procedures regarding surgeries. The director also provides leadership and support to the surgical staff, including attending staff meetings and making decisions about staff hiring, firing, or performance evaluations, and performance improvement plans.

Requirements

  • B.S. Degree required.
  • Nurse Managers, Directors of Nursing and Assistant Vice Presidents must have 3 years of clinical experience such as Charge Nurse, Unit Coordinator, etc.
  • Technical Skills as appropriate to position.
  • Discipline specific licensure.
  • Ability to read, write and speak intelligible English.
  • Ability to communicate with patients, family, peers and medical personnel.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Requires emotional stability and resilience.
  • Must be adaptable to change, be decisive, and demonstrates foresight.
  • Exhibits organizational and leadership ability.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in upper level management positions, such as Assistant Vice President, a Master's Degree is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and has 24-hour responsibility and accountability for the successful operation of a designated unit/department/service.
  • Participates as a member of the hospital's management team in planning, policy formulation and administrative decision making with particular reference to the role, functions and operation of the unit/department/service.
  • Is a steward of the hospital's mission and service excellence program.
  • Serves as a liaison between administration, the physicians, and ancillary departments in order to affect positive outcomes on the unit.
  • Sets clear performance expectations and holds people accountable.
