About The Position

Administers, directs, and coordinates activities within assigned service areas, and is responsible for the recommendation, development, and implementation of policies and procedures in these areas and for keeping the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) informed of both progress and potential problems. The Director of Surgical Services is responsible for the strategic, operational, and financial leadership of perioperative services, including the operating room, pre-operative, post-anesthesia care unit (PACU), sterile processing, and related procedural areas. This role ensures efficient, high-quality, and compliant surgical operations through collaboration with clinical leadership, including nurse managers, anesthesia providers, and physicians.

Requirements

  • Strong healthcare perioperative operations experience.
  • Ability to lead multidisciplinary clinical teams.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of progressive leadership experience in surgical services, perioperative services, or hospital operations.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex healthcare operations and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience with surgical throughput, budgeting, and performance improvement initiatives required.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities; able to work under stressful situations.
  • Possesses both good oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal relationships in a manner which enhances communication, promotes conflict resolution, and facilitates staff development.
  • Skills and knowledge to sustain and evaluate clinical competence in caring for the specific age and type of patient population served.

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees daily operations of surgical services, ensuring optimal patient flow, case scheduling, and resource utilization.
  • Works closely with Surgical Nursing Leaders (e.g., Surgical Services Nurse Assistant Director/Operations Manager) to maintain safe, high-quality patient care delivery.
  • Monitors surgical volumes, block utilization, turnover times, and throughput metrics.
  • Coordinates with the Medical Staff Office for privileges and proctoring.
  • Responsible for the direction and evaluation of patient care delivery.
  • Maintains operational aspects of the patient care unit in collaboration with other service areas.
