About The Position

The Director of Studies (DoS) reports to the Center Director and is responsible for planning the ESL program for international teenagers and young adults. This role ensures the successful implementation of the program by supervising and supporting a team of ESL teachers. In addition to academic program duties, the DoS will act in loco parentis to ensure student discipline, welfare, safety, and security. The position involves managing the delivery of the academic curriculum, maintaining high teaching standards, and resolving issues with chaperones and students. The DoS will also assist with general administrative tasks, including student arrival/departure, orientations, and resolving university-related issues. The role requires flexibility to assist with non-academic duties and staffing issues as needed.

Requirements

  • DELTA certificate or MA in TESOL.
  • 3-5 years minimum full-time experience teaching ESL.
  • Native fluency in English.
  • Previous academic management experience (preferably in summer camp).
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States.
  • Strong leadership qualities and the ability to inspire others.
  • Effective people management skills.
  • High level of responsibility and authority.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills.

Responsibilities

  • Plan the ESL program for international teenagers and young adults.
  • Ensure successful implementation of the ESL program by supervising and supporting a team of ESL teachers.
  • Review and make necessary changes to the current curriculum.
  • Design curriculum and materials for new courses.
  • Score student placement tests and place students into appropriate classes.
  • Review, edit, and update the Operations Manual for ESL Teachers.
  • Review and update teacher paperwork (e.g., sample rosters, record of work, student final evaluation forms, teacher observation forms).
  • Train the academic team before the program starts and conduct training sessions for staff joining later.
  • Prepare weekly teaching schedules and class lists.
  • Assign classrooms and keep students/teachers informed.
  • Prepare and distribute teaching supplies.
  • Assist teachers with lesson preparation and technology in the classroom.
  • Address teacher absenteeism or lateness and manage staff discipline.
  • Monitor student attendance and address absenteeism.
  • Assist teachers with questions, requests, or problems during classes.
  • Observe teachers and document observations.
  • Ensure teachers maintain student discipline, welfare, and safety during class time.
  • Deal with chaperones regarding student issues.
  • Teach when necessary.
  • Ensure teachers maintain accurate records of work and student attendance.
  • Supervise, guide, and monitor the teaching team.
  • Supervise and assist teachers in writing student evaluations.
  • Run daily teacher meetings and weekly professional development workshops.
  • Give feedback from class observations to teachers and arrange follow-up observations.
  • Evaluate the performance of teachers weekly and report to the center director.
  • Establish and maintain team discipline.
  • Create a positive atmosphere and motivate staff.
  • Supervise admin staff in their duties related to academic support and evaluate their performance.
  • Act in loco parentis to ensure and maintain student discipline, welfare, safety, and security.
  • Supervise students during meals when on duty.
  • Set and maintain a high level of teaching.
  • Review and make improvements in the curriculum throughout the program.
  • Deal with chaperones and students to answer questions and resolve issues.
  • Interact with students and chaperones to ensure their happiness.
  • Monitor and counsel students on academic matters.
  • Assist in preparing for student arrival/departure days.
  • Help new students check in and settle in.
  • Arrange and lead/co-lead student orientations and end-of-course ceremonies.
  • Liaise to ensure classrooms are booked for lessons and ceremonies.
  • Resolve university issues or complaints.
  • Maintain and protect teaching resources and equipment.
  • Take pictures of students/teachers in class.
  • Ensure timely completion and submission of student final evaluations.
  • Prepare and print end-of-course certificates.
  • Complete additional administrative tasks assigned by the management team.
  • Assist and stand in for the center director/activity manager when needed.
  • Help with non-academic duties (excursions, meals, student sicknesses, etc.) when needed.
  • Make and answer calls and messages.
  • Assist the Center Director with staffing issues.
