About The Position

The Director of Security is responsible for providing overall leadership and management of the security operations, ensuring a safe and secure environment for residents, guests, and team members. Responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and leading overall operations of security services in accordance with federal, state/provincial, local laws and Sunrise Senior Living quality service standards.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years supervisory and management experience including hiring staff, coaching, performance management daily operations supervision, discipline, and counseling
  • Three (3) years security experience preferably in assisted living/long term care, full service, skilled nursing, and/or hospitality industries
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities
  • Ability to delegate assignments to the appropriate individuals based on their skills, roles, and interests
  • Possess written and verbal skills for effective communication and the ability to facilitate small group presentations
  • Competent in organizational, time management skills
  • Demonstrates good judgment, problem solving and decision-making skills; ability to deal with issues involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
  • Demonstration of proficiency in computer skills, Microsoft Office (Windows, Outlook, Excel) and Sunrise applications with the ability to learn new applications
  • As applicable, all Sunrise team members who drive a Sunrise vehicle must review and sign the Driver job description and understand the key essential duties for safety and regulatory compliance
  • Ability to work weekends, evenings and flexible hours, available for our customers at peak service delivery days and times

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, develop, and lead the overall security operations in accordance with federal, state/provincial, local laws and Sunrise standards, guidelines and regulations.
  • Champion the security services and procedures and partner with community leadership ensuring security services and standards are achieved and maintained.
  • Ensure that safety and security inspections are performed of all community property to include common areas, resident corridors, parking areas and perimeter access.
  • Oversee that patrols of community buildings and grounds are conducted as scheduled.
  • Ensure that patrols are conducted to prevent and discover any activity that is in violation of criminal, fire, or safety codes.
  • Monitor and evaluate that security team members watch for and report irregularities such as fire hazards, leaking water pipes, and security doors left unsecured.
  • Oversee security team members investigate and report all acts of unlawful or safety hazards that would endanger persons or property.
  • Lead investigations and review all incidents and suspicious occurrences reported by security team members.
  • Responsible for security calls and complaints, taking necessary action and handling on-scene emergency situations.
  • Assess and provide corrective action on dangerous conditions and any damaged or defective equipment, machinery, and property reported by security team members.
  • Ensure that outside furniture or fixtures are secure in the event of inclement weather.
  • Partner with leadership team to ensure community is in compliance with national/provincial regulations pertaining to occupational health and safety requirements and promotion of Risk Management programs and policies; monitor adherence to safety rules and regulations.
  • Ensure that safety procedures are practiced at all times including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), fire extinguishers, MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets), and Lockout Tagout procedures.
  • Ensure that security team members escort residents and team members to their cars after hours and as requested.
  • Ensure the community flag(s) are raised and lowered appropriately.
  • Oversee transportation for residents in accordance with policy.
  • Review, read, notate and initial the Daily Log and Security Log to document and learn about pertinent information and about security activities.
  • Review previous log entries, notes, and memorandums and redirects staff activities as appropriate.
  • Ensure effective Cross Over meetings are performed.
  • Ensure inventories are conducted of security equipment and replenished as needed.
  • Ensure appropriate accident and incident forms are competed and actions taken to minimize the likelihood of repeat issues.
  • Assist in the presentation and value of Sunrise’s products and services for our residents, families, and team members and targeted referral sources.
  • Assist the executive director in completing the annual community budget.
  • Understand and manage the department budget to include labor/labour and other expenses and its impact on the community’s bottom line.
  • Review monthly financial statements and implements plans of action for deficiencies.
  • Process and submit monthly expenses and budget data timely per Sunrise policies and internal business controls.
  • Coordinate with the community team to achieve maximum staff economies and cross training when applicable.
  • Understand the internal cost associated with all Sunrise resident care programs.
  • Manage large scale capital projects, ensuring approved vendors are paid appropriately.
  • Manage the department, including but not limited to recruit, hire, train, coach, and discipline.
  • Partner in the delivery and participation in Sunrise University Training and self-study programs during the required timeframe.
  • Develop a working knowledge of state/province regulations and ensures compliance through supervising and coaching team members.
  • Achieve the Team Member Engagement goals and actively lead in the Engagement Improvement Planning sessions.
  • Complete team member staffing and scheduling according to operational and budgetary guidelines.
  • Review timekeeping practices and payroll reports daily to ensure all hours worked are recorded and appropriately paid.
  • Conduct timely performance appraisals with meaningful conversations.
  • Hold team accountable and correct actions when necessary and document.
  • Attend regular meetings; Stand Up, Cross Over, Department Head Meetings, Town Hall, Quality Improvement, and others as directed by the Executive Director.
  • Keep abreast of professional developments in the field by reading, attending conferences, and training sessions.
  • Maintain compliance in assigned required training and all training required by state/province or other regulating authorities as applicable to this role to ensure that Sunrise standards are always met.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
