About The Position

Defector Media, a 100-percent worker-owned and -operated media company launched in 2020, is seeking a Director of Revenue. The company's subscription business is mature and stable, representing over 80% of total revenue. The Director of Revenue will manage the existing subscription business and drive revenue growth across all streams, with oversight from the VP of Revenue & Operations and support from the editorial team. This role involves a wide range of responsibilities due to the small in-house operations team and reliance on outside vendors for specialized expertise. The position requires a versatile individual who can adapt to various operational tasks and play utility roles enthusiastically.

Requirements

  • A college degree and 4+ years of work experience, or equivalent total work experience sufficient to complete the job duties.
  • Ability to translate many different types of data (financial, customer, product) into business insights using appropriate modeling and visualization tools.
  • Experience working with customer insights and market research.
  • Expertise in developing high-quality presentations for different types of audiences, especially a non-technical editorial audience.
  • Willingness to execute on even mundane tasks with enthusiasm and without ego.
  • Direct experience working in digital written media is ideal.
  • Other potentially relevant work experience could come from elsewhere in media, operational or commercially-focused teams at start-ups and/or small businesses, or consulting/banking analyst programs.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in digital marketing, ad sales, or audience engagement.
  • Experience as a data scientist or in product management.
  • Credibility as a financial analyst.
  • Experience as a newsletter copywriter, customer service manager, video production coordinator, or restorative justice facilitator.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the existing subscription business, using and adapting metrics to monitor performance and leading new strategies for growth.
  • Grow revenue across all company revenue streams, both subscription and non-subscription.
  • Perform audience research and content analysis.
  • Sell advertising units on the website and newsletters.
  • Experiment with paid marketing on advertising platforms.
  • Conduct ad-hoc financial modeling and scenario forecasting.
  • Deliver benefits for subscribers and manage customer experience issues.
  • Contribute to non-revenue operational committees and initiatives (HR, PR, social media).
  • Manage Defector’s product roadmap with third-party developers and equivalent workflows with other outside vendors.
  • Communicate quantitative work and technical insights to editorial staff.
  • Execute special projects.
