The Director of Regional Pharmacy Services coordinates and directs the administrative, technical, clerical, and personnel functions of pharmacy departments across multiple hospitals. The director may act as Pharmacist in Charge at any location as needed and ensures pharmacy directors and operations coordinators at the listed hospitals coordinate their work through a standardized approach. The role recruits and maintains adequate regional pharmacy staffing, advances pharmacy practice to improve care quality, and directs the development, delivery, and marketing of clinical and operational programs and services. It also uses the hospitals’ group purchasing organization to support fiscally responsible purchasing and manages pharmacy operations within budgets across multiple hospitals. The position requires extensive collaboration with hospital administration, medical staff, nursing services, and non-hospital personnel across multiple facilities and geographic areas. The director uses technology to improve efficiency and must meet daily, weekly, and annual goals with little to no direct supervision. The role ensures compliance with state and federal requirements for pharmaceuticals and controlled substances and oversees antibiotic stewardship across the regional pharmacy service line. The director is responsible for appropriate patient care across age groups, including pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric patients. This includes assessing patient information, interpreting age-specific needs, evaluating medication orders, recommending therapy, and managing therapy through protocols. The role also requires sensitivity to patients’, visitors’, and staff members’ cultural and religious beliefs; maintaining department and hospital records; entering accurate information into the electronic health record; and fulfilling professional responsibilities related to pharmaceutical dispensing, procurement, control, and consultation. The director supervises and directs support personnel and performs other duties as assigned. Performance expectations include advancing pharmacy operations and clinical services at least quarterly, independently applying hospital policies and government regulations, consulting across disciplines, routinely communicating recommendations to hospital leadership, implementing policies and disseminating information within requested timeframes, using age-specific patient knowledge to help avoid major medication errors, following Standard Precautions and required personal protective equipment practices, and consistently following USP 797, USP 795, and USP 800 practices.
