About The Position

At Mural, we're building a new layer of collaboration where people and intelligent systems work together in real time. The Design and Research team focuses on making complexity clear, shaping how humans and AI co-create, collaborate, and reason within a shared visual canvas. This role involves leading a small team of designers and taking ownership of how agents behave across Mural's platform. It combines people leadership with interaction design expertise, focusing on building both a team and a design discipline. The team uses Mural's product daily for collaboration, ideation, and prototyping, meaning your design work will impact millions globally.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of product design experience.
  • Recent experience managing and growing designers, ideally in ambiguous, 0→1 problem spaces.
  • A track record of defining or evolving a design pattern language or system (behavior-based systems preferred).
  • Familiarity with agent-based or AI-assisted experience design (memory, context windows, tool use, autonomy/control tradeoffs).
  • Comfort using code as a design tool for prototyping and exploring interaction/system behavior.
  • Strong systems thinking, understanding how design decisions cascade across flows, surfaces, and journeys.
  • Experience partnering with engineering to evolve prototypes into scaled implementations.
  • Experience representing design in senior, cross-functional strategy conversations.
  • Deep empathy for diverse, global users.
  • Experience designing for accessibility and inclusivity at scale.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience growing the capabilities of a design team from a small base.
  • Background in multi-agent systems, orchestration, or workflow automation.
  • Experience with canvas-based or spatial interfaces.
  • Experience designing with structured and unstructured data in the same environment.
  • A history of shaping 0→1 products or platform-level capabilities.
  • Public writing, speaking, or thought leadership on AI-native design.

Responsibilities

  • Define what agent-native design means at Mural and build the team and pattern language to implement it.
  • Define the underlying grammar for how agents disclose intent, request permission, hand off control, signal confidence, and recover from error across the product.
  • Lead a small team of designers in shipping against the defined grammar.
  • Stay hands-on by prototyping challenging, high-ambiguity interactions.
  • Hire, develop, and manage a small team of product designers focused on agentic and AI-native experiences.
  • Set craft standards, run critiques, and provide direct, specific feedback.
  • Own the team's roadmap and staffing in collaboration with product and engineering leads.
  • Represent the team's work, capacity, and needs to the VP of Design and cross-functional leadership.
  • Define and maintain Mural's interaction pattern language for agent behavior (permission, disclosure, handoff, confidence, error recovery).
  • Use code and rapid prototyping as a primary design tool to test agent behaviors.
  • Establish reusable primitives (components, states, motion, copy patterns) for the broader design organization.
  • Take on the most challenging and least-defined interaction problems.
  • Represent design's perspective in product strategy discussions regarding agent integration.
  • Partner with research to build a shared understanding of control, autonomy, and trust tradeoffs.
  • Lead workshops and design sprints to align stakeholders on agent-related decisions.
  • Contribute to Mural's external communication on AI-native design.

Benefits

  • Reasonable accommodation for individuals with disabilities to participate in the job application or interview process, to perform essential job functions, and to receive other benefits and privileges of employment.
