The Director of Nursing (DON) is a registered nurse who oversees and supervises the care of all the residents. The DON also provides direct resident/patient care. This role involves the overall management of the entire nursing department and staffing levels, developing and implementing nursing policies and procedures, and ensuring resident safety and respectful treatment. The DON is also responsible for staff recruitment, hiring, training, and conducting in-services. This position acts as a liaison between the facility, physicians, and family members, and may be required to provide testimony in legal proceedings. Collaboration with other departments is essential for excellent resident care, as is managing department budgeting and reporting, and staying current with regulation changes. Participation in QA, Utilization Review, Patient Care conferences, and state surveys is also a key part of the role. The DON coordinates MDS and care planning, conducts employee appraisals, and handles disciplinary actions and terminations, while maintaining strict confidentiality of employee and resident information. Direct, hands-on resident/patient care is provided as needed.
