The Director of Nursing (DON) has administrative authority and responsibility for patient care services, policies and procedures, evidence-based nursing standards of patient care, and compliance with the Nurse Practice Act. This role reports directly to the site administrator and has an indirect reporting relationship to the Regional Nurse Executive and the System Chief Nursing Officer. The DON maintains sound organizational relationships and shared decision making with the Board of Governors, Site leadership, physicians, department leaders, and all stakeholders. Key responsibilities include developing, implementing, and evaluating long and short-term goals for nursing and assigned departments, directing and planning process improvements in patient care within resource constraints, and ensuring nursing care aligns with the Shriners Hospitals for Children (SHC) Professional Practice Model. The DON also maintains effective communication with all personnel, physicians, board members, and stakeholders, and stays aware of legislation affecting nursing practice, acting as a resource for nursing standards and practices.
