About The Position

The Director will direct the delivery of nursing care, treatments, and services for all Pathways areas where nursing care is delivered whether this care is delivered by RNs, LPNs, or psychiatric technicians. The employee is responsible for the daily operations of assigned units and supervision of assigned personnel. The employee makes decisions that require expert clinical judgment and collaborates with physicians, staff, patients, and families. Responsible for interviewing, completing staff evaluations, and monitoring staff for compliance with policies, procedures, and Quality Improvement standards. Under the direction of the Executive Director of Pathways and the Medical Director for Pathways, the Director of Nursing functions at the senior leadership level to provide effective leadership and to coordinate delivery of care, treatment, and services. This employee is responsible for twenty-four hours per day, seven days per week. Current RN licensure as approved for practice in the State of Tennessee and a Bachelor's degree is required. The employee is subject to call back as required by the hospital.

Requirements

  • Current RN licensure as approved for practice in the State of Tennessee
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Must possess skills and proficiencies in the principles, concepts and techniques of the mental health profession
  • BLS required
  • Skill and proficiency training in the principles, concepts, and techniques of the nursing profession for providing care to adult, geriatric, adolescent and pediatric patients
  • Ability to express ideas effectively when speaking to groups and hospital personnel
  • Ability to gather and analyze data and prepare reports
  • Numerical ability required to evaluate statistical data and to make various computations in planning departmental operations and budget.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people (i.e. organizing and planning programs, developing staff and assigning personnel)
  • Organizational ability to plan and control the entire activities of the nursing department and personnel activities
  • Ability to evaluate reports, programs, and other data for utilization
  • Ability to relate to people in all areas of business, organizations.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency in current practices and techniques in specific area nursing and management of the psychiatric client as acquired through 5-10 years clinical experience, preferred
  • Previous management and supervisory experience preferred.
  • Additional certifications/competencies may be required at department discretion

Responsibilities

  • Assumes an active role with the Pathways’ advisory board, medical staff, and other management staff and departments within the hospital.
  • Communicates with the Executive Director and other leaders for the purpose of discussing nursing care policies, management needs, patient and staff needs, as well as future planning and departmental goals.
  • Collaborates with internal and external physicians, nursing, and social services to ensure the appropriate placement of adult psychiatric patients.
  • Assigns and monitors patient care according to patient acuity, plans of care, and competency of assigned, available personnel.
  • Responsible for hiring adequate, competent staff, employee coaching and evaluations, and performance improvement plans as needed.
  • Assures unit compliance with all regulatory agency requirements and nursing standards.
  • Investigates causes of grievances and complaints of patients, physicians, visitors, employees, completes appropriate documentation, and reports findings to the Executive Director or appropriate person.
  • Responsible for the Pathways' Infection Control Program including development, implementation, and review.
  • Works collaboratively with other departments serving as the resource person for Infection Control issues for Pathways.
  • Reviews, monitors, and adjusts operations to ensure budget expectations are met.
  • Reviews and evaluates continuing education materials.
  • Prepares in-services and conducts training as needed to ensure staff competency.
  • Recognizes and participates in activities that foster personal and professional growth.
  • Develops and maintains a positive work environment and the overall team effort.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.
