About The Position

Responsible for the 24-hour management of designated units assuring facility meets the established standard of care. The Director of Nursing (DON) for Medical-Surgical (Med/Surg) is a high-level executive role responsible for the strategic, operational, fiscal, and clinical leadership of multiple inpatient medical-surgical units. Because medical-surgical nursing covers one of the largest patient populations in the hospital, this leader oversees the care of adult patients with a massive range of medical conditions and surgical recovery needs.

Requirements

  • MSN required
  • Minimum of five (5) years clinical experience required
  • Minimum of two (2) years progressive management experience required.
  • Current RN license in the State of Nevada.

Responsibilities

  • Manage Day-to-Day Operations: Oversee multiple clinical units, which often include general med/surg, telemetry, orthopedics, oncology, and surgical recovery floors.
  • 24/7 Accountability: Direct multi-unit systems to ensure smooth continuous clinical workflows, effective bed management, and streamlined patient discharge/transfer processes.
  • Policy Development: Establish, update, and implement localized healthcare procedures to match evolving modern clinical standards.
  • Dynamic Staffing Models: Create and adjust staffing matrices based on daily patient census and acuity levels to protect safety metrics and manage nurse-to-patient ratios.
  • Talent Development: Lead the recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and mentoring of nurse managers, supervisors, educators, and front-line RNs/LPNs.
  • Culture and Alignment: Foster collaborative, shared-governance environments and navigate labor relations or union dynamics if applicable to the facility.
  • Patient Safety Initiatives: Drive clinical benchmarks to dramatically minimize hospital-acquired conditions, such as patient falls, hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPI), CLABSI/CAUTI, and medication errors.
  • Audit Readiness: Maintain constant documentation and performance readiness for state department of health audits, CMS, and The Joint Commission (TJC) surveys.
  • Patient Satisfaction: Monitor HCAHPS scores, resolve escalated patient or family grievances, and implement strategies to boost the patient care experience.
  • Budget Oversight: Formulate and manage the annual operational and capital budgets for the entire Med/Surg division.
  • Resource Management: Monitor labor costs, systematically reduce unnecessary overtime, and optimize medical supply inventories.
