About The Position

The Director provides overall leadership and administrative oversight of institutional research functions to support the University’s internal reporting, decision making, planning, and continuous improvement efforts. The Director provides analytical leadership and data-informed insights to inform and support student success and graduation initiatives, academic program reviews, and accreditation processes. Responsibilities include overseeing the administration of student surveys, directing the analysis and publication of results, and maintenance of survey response databases. The Director leads analytical studies aligned with the University’s academic priorities, evaluates, prioritizes, and directs research initiatives aligned with institutional priorities, and provides strategic analysis and guidance in support of ongoing academic planning processes. The Director supervises Institutional Research staff and ensures the effective delivery of data, reporting, and analytical services. The Director provides strategic recommendations to senior leadership to inform institutional planning, policy development, and decision-making. The Director is responsible for leading, directing, and overseeing institutional research functions that support the University’s commitment to evidence-based planning, decision-making, and continuous improvement. The Director exercises independent judgment in determining research priorities, analytical methodologies, and reporting frameworks, and oversees institutional reporting to external agencies, including the CSU Chancellor’s Office and accrediting bodies. This role involves close collaboration with the Provost’s leadership team, the Deans’ Council, faculty, the Academic Senate, support staff, the CSU Chancellor’s Office, and other key stakeholders to provide accurate, timely, and actionable data and analysis in support of assessment requirements and academically related analytical studies. The Director also oversees the development and maintenance of the Institutional Research website, including online reports and dashboards that present commonly used institutional data such as retention and graduation rates, degrees awarded, student enrollment and admissions trends, survey results, and other analytical studies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
  • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in analytics, qualitative and quantitative research methods, survey design, and data analysis
  • Experience working at a college or university
  • Knowledge of and experience coordinating institutional research functions
  • Demonstrated leadership, management, organizational, and communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with units across campus
  • Ability to interact effectively within a culturally and ethnically diverse community

Nice To Haves

  • Earned master’s degree or doctorate from an accredited institution
  • Experience in higher education demonstrating progressively increasing levels of responsibility, preferably at postsecondary institutions
  • Ability to design and conduct research studies and lead institutional research projects using appropriate analytical methodologies
  • Demonstrated vision and expertise in higher education metrics and analytics, including qualitative and quantitative research methods, survey design, and data analysis
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex quantitative data into actionable information; design and produce periodic reports for campus leadership, accrediting bodies, and external agencies; and clearly present data in narrative, tabular, and graphical formats
  • Experience coordinating and providing user support and training
  • Experience ensuring integrity in analysis and reporting, including the ability to analyze complex datasets and troubleshoot data integrity issues
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with diverse constituencies; ability to represent the office on committees and provide consultative services as needed
  • Proven ability to supervise and manage a diverse team
  • Exemplary written, oral, and visual communication skills, including the ability to write data summaries and analyses, design effective data presentations, and communicate technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
