About The Position

OpenDor Media is seeking a Director of Finance and Controller to lead the accounting and finance functions for a global, mission-driven nonprofit with an operating budget of approximately $20 million. This role offers significant ownership and leadership opportunities, acting as a key partner to division heads and the CFO. The organization has recently upgraded its ERP system (IES platform), modernized its AP workflow (BILL.com), and is undergoing a global corporate governance review. This position is ideal for someone looking to build and refine a finance department into a highly efficient operation. While not a CFO role, it carries substantial responsibility due to the CFO's part-time engagement. The Director will own the general ledger, month-end close, consolidated GAAP statements, internal controls, audits, Form 990, non-U.S. accounting, budgeting, forecasting, cash management, AP/AR, the systems stack, and lead the finance team. They will also serve as the primary finance partner to program divisions and be a senior finance voice in operational decisions. The CFO retains oversight of Board relations, final budget approval, investment strategy, policy approval, and executive/donor strategy.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including responsibility for a full close cycle and consolidated financial statements.
  • Highly inquisitive, curious, and focused on continuous process improvement.
  • Deep working knowledge of U.S. GAAP, with direct experience applying nonprofit accounting standards (net asset classification, contribution revenue recognition, functional expense allocation).
  • Experience in a multi-entity, multi-currency, or multi-country environment.
  • Demonstrated ownership of an external audit and of an organization's internal control environment.
  • Experience supervising and developing accounting staff.
  • Strong ERP and systems fluency, and a genuine appetite for making processes cleaner and more automated.
  • High proficiency with Excel and Google Workspace.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical accounting to non-finance stakeholders.
  • Sound judgment, discretion, and comfort operating with a high degree of autonomy in a lean, fast-moving organization.

Nice To Haves

  • CPA and or MBA with a strong accounting background
  • Nonprofit sector experience, ideally in an organization of comparable size and complexity.
  • Knowledge of payroll processes, VAT, and other elements/requirements of cross-border operations.
  • Experience implementing or optimizing an ERP or AP automation platform.
  • Familiarity with Form 990 and nonprofit governance practice.

Responsibilities

  • Own the general ledger and chart of accounts across all entities and locations, ensuring data integrity from integrated systems.
  • Manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual close calendar, delivering reconciled results on time.
  • Prepare consolidated financial statements in accordance with U.S. GAAP for nonprofit organizations, including variance analysis.
  • Oversee revenue recognition for contributions, grants, and earned revenue, including donor restrictions and net asset releases.
  • Prepare recurring reporting packages for leadership, the Board, and other constituents, and present financial data as needed.
  • Manage accounting and reporting for all non-U.S. operations, including intercompany activities, foreign currency translation, and funding.
  • Ensure timely local statutory filings, payroll tax, and indirect tax compliance in coordination with in-country advisors.
  • Oversee U.S. and international payroll processing and the accurate recording of compensation and benefits.
  • Own the internal control environment: design, document, test, and remediate controls, ensuring segregation of duties.
  • Serve as the primary liaison for the annual audit and Form 990, managing external audit and tax firms.
  • Draft, maintain, and enforce finance policies and procedures, including delegation of authority and expense policies.
  • Support the organization's governance and compliance efforts across jurisdictions.
  • Operationally manage the annual budget and ongoing forecast cycle, including calendar, templates, and consolidation.
  • Serve as the finance partner to assigned program divisions, assisting with budget development, analysis of actuals, and spending decisions.
  • Build and maintain supporting schedules for the multi-year financial model and analyze financial trends.
  • Own operating cash management, banking administration, accounts receivable, and weekly cash and investment reporting.
  • Support the CFO with investment reporting, reserve monitoring, and Investment Policy Statement compliance.
  • Lead and develop the finance and accounting team.
  • Serve as the functional owner of the finance systems stack, banking platforms, and workflow tools, driving automation and process improvement.
  • Develop documentation and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the finance function.
