About The Position

IDX is seeking a Director of Engineering to lead its software engineering organization and help evolve how it builds, delivers, and operates secure digital products. This is a technical leadership role, rather than a day-to-day coding position, with accountability for software architecture, engineering management, quality engineering, and test automation. The Director partners closely with Product Management, Cloud Operations, Security, Compliance, IT, and other internal stakeholders. The role is suited to an experienced engineering leader or a Senior Engineering Manager ready to take on broader organizational and technical responsibility. It reports to the Chief Technology Officer and is hybrid, with time spent in the IDX office in Beaverton, Oregon.

Requirements

  • Progressive software engineering leadership experience, including success managing and developing individual engineers.
  • Strong technical judgment and experience guiding architecture for cloud-based production software systems.
  • Experience with modern web or mobile applications, APIs, third-party integrations, microservices, and event-driven architectures.
  • Working knowledge of AWS and contemporary software delivery practices, including automated testing, CI/CD, observability, and operational readiness.
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with Product Management and other stakeholders to turn priorities into realistic delivery plans and resolve tradeoffs constructively.
  • A record of improving engineering quality, delivery practices, technical health, and team effectiveness.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical decisions, risks, and options to technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • A coaching-oriented leadership style that creates accountability while enabling teams to make sound decisions with some autonomy.
  • Practical curiosity about AI-assisted engineering and judgment to promote its responsible use without sacrificing security, quality, or maintainability.
  • Leadership experience in a regulated business or another environment with significant security, privacy, or compliance obligations.
  • Familiarity with one or more of HIPAA, SOC 2, PCI DSS, or FISMA.
  • Experience leading distributed or nearshore engineering teams.
  • Experience modernizing software architecture or reducing material technical debt.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day leadership for the engineering organization, establishing priorities, ownership, and operating rhythms.
  • Coach and develop engineers through regular feedback, performance reviews, and career development.
  • Own software architecture and guide technical decisions across web and mobile applications, APIs, external integrations, microservices, and event-driven systems.
  • Partner with Product Management on delivery planning, roadmap execution, and transparent resolution of scope, schedule, quality, and technical tradeoffs.
  • Lead quality engineering and test automation, including the evolution of practical, risk-based testing strategies.
  • Partner with Cloud Operations on cloud architecture, platform reliability, observability, DevOps, and CI/CD capabilities in AWS and Azure DevOps.
  • Partner with Security, Compliance, and IT to embed security, privacy, resilience, and compliance considerations throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Strengthen engineering practices that prevent incidents and improve service reliability.
  • Advance the responsible use of AI and automation in daily engineering work, building team confidence, establishing sound practices, and identifying appropriate AI-enabled product opportunities.
  • Improve delivery predictability, developer productivity, technical-debt management, and roadmap outcomes through meaningful metrics and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with third-party vendors and engineering partners to maintain clear technical expectations and effective delivery relationships.
  • Promote high standards, pragmatic problem-solving, sustainable delivery, coaching, delegation, and empowered decision-making.
