Director of Engineering, Fleet Applications

Agility Robotics•Pittsburgh, PA
•$236,000 - $369,000•Hybrid

About The Position

Agility’s commercially deployed humanoids operate alongside teams in warehouses, manufacturing facilities, and distribution centers—tackling physically demanding and repetitive tasks while enabling workers to focus on higher-value work. With industry-leading safety standards and years of proven deployment data, we're pioneering a new era of automation that enhances human potential. The Director of Fleet Applications will leverage multiple teams of full-stack, front-end and cloud services developers to deliver Arc to our customers. Arc is a cloud SaaS platform that handles software distribution, device configuration and status, data lakehousing, and task workflow management for deployed Digit fleets and their ecosystem devices. It enables supervisors to inspect metrics, manage workflows and workcells, and administer robot and device assets. Additionally, you will also drive the product vision for our Robot Operations Center and deliver applications focused on customer support, remote issue resolution and service. The Director will work with Product partners, Principal Architects and TPMs, to define and deliver the product vision. This is an execution focused role, ensuring speedy delivery into production and data-driven continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • You have led multiple engineering teams (managing managers and senior ICs) towards product delivery on a committed timeline, and you can describe what slipped and what you did about it.
  • You have taken a product from bespoke or single-customer delivery to a multi-tenant SaaS offering — or done the reverse, standing up single-tenant deployments for enterprise customers who demanded isolation.
  • You are technical enough to review an architecture proposal, argue about a language, OSS or tech stack choice on the merits.
  • You have worked with mature CI/CD pipelines and Release Engineering teams and processes to accelerate ship cadence as well as software quality for your teams.
  • You have managed distributed teams of remote ICs.
  • You partner well with Product and TPM counterparts and don't need to own the roadmap to feel ownership of the outcome.

Nice To Haves

  • Domain experience in Robotics, Industrial Automation, IIoT, or fleet/telematics
  • Full-stack and cloud services breadth (you'll have both under you)
  • SOC 2 or comparable compliance work as an engineering leader
  • Experience with on-device or embedded UI alongside web

Responsibilities

  • Delivery of Arc Platform. Crafting the technical roadmap and commit to dates based on product and customer targets. Lead resource and staffing planning accordingly.
  • Multiple teams, one roadmap. A UI team building the on-robot interfaces and the web and mobile experiences, and a cloud services team owning workflow orchestration, resource management, and fleet data aggregation from the edge. Your job is to make them feel like one organization with one set of commitments.
  • Technical roadmaps & decision making. Achieve team buy-in and consensus on OSS selection, language and framework choices, service boundaries, API contracts. You bring a point of view, you invite the Principal Architect to disagree with it, and you close the decision so the teams can move.
  • Requirements on your upstream dependencies. SOC 2 readiness and the multi-cell and single-tenant deployment architectures come from the Cloud Platform team. You need enough depth to write the requirements they build against and to review their proposals critically, not to accept them on faith.
  • New surfaces for the fleet. Applications that let our support engineers diagnose and resolve customer-raised issues remotely, and mobile experiences that let a site leader check on their Digit fleet without sitting at a desk.
  • The team itself. Hiring, leveling, performance, and growth for a fully distributed engineering organization.
