About The Position

The Director of Development is responsible for designing and directing activities to maintain and expand the Agency's discretionary and restricted resources. This includes cultivating donors, managing major gifts and planned giving programs, overseeing the annual campaign, securing foundation grants, and implementing direct mail strategies. The role also involves leading and advising the Agency in fundraising strategy and planning, managing all aspects of fundraising and outreach, and collaborating with the Agency staff and Board of Directors to leverage contacts and strengthen the resource development network. The Director will work closely with executive staff, the Board of Directors, and other stakeholders to identify and cultivate relationships with key individuals and organizations. Additionally, the position involves directing the day-to-day operations of the Development Department, building and managing a high-performing team, developing and managing a departmental budget, and implementing a comprehensive fundraising plan. The Director will also be responsible for preparing and delivering reports, identifying and maintaining effective systems and processes for fundraising operations, and implementing technology solutions to support these efforts.

Requirements

  • Master’s, Bachelor’s or equivalent degree in a relevant field plus at least eight years’ full-time experience in development or a closely related field; experience can be substituted for education on a one-to-one basis.
  • Recent successful experience working in a multi-cultural environment.
  • At least five years’ experience working in a non-profit environment.
  • Proficiency in typing and computer literacy, including internet research, advanced level in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook), and databases.
  • Demonstrated accomplishments in and ability to engage and communicate effectively with others in both verbal and written English, including written proposals, motivational solicitation materials, and public presentations.

  • Hearing and talking on telephone and in person; standing, walking, sitting, pinching and finger flexion are required constantly (over 2/3 of the workday).
  • Lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, stooping, crouching, and kneeling are required occasionally (under 1/3 of the workday).

Responsibilities

  • Design and direct activities necessary to maintain and expand Agency discretionary and restricted resources, including cultivation of donors, major gifts and planned giving programs, annual campaign, foundation grants and direct mail.
  • Lead and advise the Agency in the creation and implementation of fundraising strategy and planning.
  • Manage all aspects of fundraising and outreach by leading projects or supporting others, including conducting solicitation of individual donors, preparing written proposals, and ensuring appropriate and timely follow-up to meet fundraising goals.
  • Lead and partner with Agency staff and Board of Directors on leveraging their contacts to create and strengthen a broad resource development network within the Agency.
  • Work closely with executive staff, Board of Directors, and other stakeholders to identify and cultivate relationships with key stakeholders, including potential donors, community leaders, and elected officials.
  • Collaborate with Executive Team and Board of Directors in developing a systematic approach to expand revenue that will sustain programs, services, operating needs, and long-term goals.
  • Direct and perform research of public and private grant agencies and foundations to identify sources of unrestricted, restricted and capacity-building funding.
  • Manage the initiation and implementation of an annual campaign and major gifts program; interact with and cultivate positive donor relationships; cultivate major gifts, including planned giving and Qualified Charitable Deductions (QCDs).
  • Represent the Agency in public and develop and maintain relationships with external stakeholders, including donors, community leaders, and peer groups.
  • Organize and manage special events, projects, and major fundraisers.
  • Oversee management of the organization’s volunteer program.
  • Provide stewardship of gifts and grants: acknowledgement, monitoring, accounting, and reporting.
  • Provide stewardship of donor portfolios, including moves management.
  • Direct the day-to-day operation of the Development Department.
  • Build and manage a high-performing team that is aligned with the organization’s mission, values, and strategic priorities.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to development staff to build their capacity to achieve fundraising goals and to support the organization’s mission and goals.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning within the development team and across the organization.
  • Support career development of department staff.

  • Prepare and deliver performance, financial and status reports.
  • Identify and maintain effective systems and processes to support fundraising and development operations, including gift processing, database management, and reporting.
  • Ensure that records and reports of all major donor, corporate, and foundation contacts, as well as private and other fundraising activities, are complete and accurate. Maintain compliance with all local, state, and federal statutes regarding fundraising activities and accountability.
  • Identify and implement technology solutions to support fundraising and development operations and to enhance donor engagement and stewardship.
  • Serve on Agency special projects teams and provide leadership, as needed.
  • Provide transportation and use personal vehicle for Agency business.
  • Attend and participate in staff, program, Agency and community meetings and training, as required.
