About The Position

Vertex Education is seeking a Director of Compliance Services to architect and launch a centralized, national compliance service for its school clients. This role is responsible for transforming a fragmented and inefficient compliance function into a centralized, standardized, and scalable system that ensures timely, accurate reporting for clients across jurisdictions. The mission is to design and implement a well-documented, repeatable operational playbook that eliminates bottlenecks, enables proactive risk management, and allows teams to execute with consistency and confidence. With a strong systems-builder mindset, the role prioritizes process standardization over bespoke solutions, leveraging ERP, reporting, and project management technology platforms to deliver immediate value. Ultimately, the goal is to build a profitable, efficient, and scalable compliance service line that directly supports the mission of changing lives through education by helping schools operate with excellence.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Finance, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to standardize complex, multi-entity, or multi-jurisdiction processes into a repeatable, scalable operating model.
  • Strong systems and operations orientation, with the ability to translate ambiguous, fragmented work into structured processes, clear ownership, and documented SOPs.
  • Experience operating in client-facing environments, including scoping work, managing expectations, and making tradeoffs between standardization and customization.
  • People leadership experience, with the ability to build, develop, and align teams around new ways of working.
  • Strong working knowledge of compliance or regulated reporting environments, with the ability to ask the right questions, identify risk, and design processes that ensure accuracy and timeliness.
  • Proven ability to lead complex system implementations or service-line buildouts from concept through execution.
  • Ability to translate operational needs into clear technology requirements and drive results in partnership with IT using existing platforms (e.g., ERP, project management, and collaboration tools).

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree in Business, Finance, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • Experience in K–12 education, charter schools, or school finance, particularly in environments with state-specific compliance and reporting requirements.
  • Experience with California charter school compliance requirements and reporting frameworks.
  • Familiarity with key funding and reporting structures such as Title programs and state budget processes.
  • Experience building or managing external-facing professional services, and contributing to the commercial performance of a service or program (e.g., scoping, pricing, margin management, or resource planning).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 (SharePoint, Teams) and workflow tools (e.g., Asana), with working familiarity with ERP or financial management systems used to support compliance reporting and operational workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze existing compliance activities across Vertex’s regions and client portfolios to identify patterns and opportunities for a single, repeatable national process.
  • Design, document, and maintain definitive Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for client compliance reporting.
  • Build and manage compliance and project management templates and collaboration models to ensure consistent execution and visibility across regions.
  • Develop and deliver training materials to enable consistent adoption of standardized workflows.
  • Partner with the Technology team to define data requirements, reporting needs, and system integrations that support compliance workflows across ERP, project management, and collaboration platforms.
  • Define and execute a multi-year strategy for the national compliance service line, including standardized offerings and pricing.
  • Evaluate non-standard compliance requests and establish clear scoping and pricing for out-of-scope work.
  • Lead expansion into new states by developing state-specific addendums to the national framework.
  • Enable service line growth through collaboration with regional heads, school finance professionals, and school partnerships teams.
  • Lead the service line to achieve profitability targets by managing its budget and applying continuous process improvement principles.
  • Oversee execution of compliance work to ensure consistent use of standardized processes and technology.
  • Act as the escalation point and crisis manager for compliance breaches, leading remediation and client communication.
  • Establish communication cadences, role clarity, and accountability across cross-functional teams.
  • Create a continuous improvement loop to refine workflows, documentation, and tools.
  • Partner with Technology to identify automation opportunities, refine system configurations, and ensure compliance platforms evolve with the service line.
