About The Position

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Care for Unit 1 West, Fanning Centre provides overall operational and clinical leadership for a specialized Long Term Care unit serving younger adults with physical, cognitive and behavioral needs. The Director of Care ensures high-quality, trauma-informed, harm-reduction-focused care that reflects the unique needs of clients with complex psychosocial histories, responsive behaviours, and substance use considerations. This role leads interdisciplinary teams in delivering resident-centred care grounded in dignity, choice, safety, and equity, while aligning with Carewest’s strategic priorities, legislative requirements, and accreditation standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a health-related discipline required
  • Minimum 3 years of leadership experience in continuing care or a related healthcare setting serving individuals with complex care needs.
  • Current registration with a relevant health professional regulatory body.
  • Strong understanding of healthcare regulations including CCHSS, Accommodation Standards, and accreditation requirements.
  • Proven ability to lead change, engage staff, and navigate complex clinical and operational challenges.
  • Strong business acumen and systems thinking to support sustainable, high-quality care delivery

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership to ensure delivery of high-quality, evidence-based, trauma-informed care for younger adults in Long Term Care.
  • Lead the development and oversight of behaviour management approaches, ensuring consistent, ethical, and person-centred responses to responsive behaviours.
  • Promote a culture of accountability and learning by ensuring staff feel supported to report concerns, participate in safety planning, and engage in continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Lead interdisciplinary teams to work to full scope of practice.
  • Build staff capacity through coaching, support, and reflective practice.
  • Oversee talent acquisition, employee development and performance evaluations for the portfolio.
  • Lead change initiatives.
  • Analyze trends related to behaviours, incidents, and substance use, identifying gaps and implementing improvement strategies.
  • Ensure continuous quality improvement aligned with best practices, accreditation standards, and EQuaL program priorities.
  • Collaborate with internal partners, specialty services, and external stakeholders to support integrated, coordinated care for EQuaL clients with complex needs.
  • Ensure compliance with Continuing Care Health Service Standards, Accommodation Standards, and organizational requirements.
  • Promote proactive risk assessment and mitigation strategies.
  • Optimize financial and operational resources to ensure sustainability and continuous improvement.
