About The Position

The Director of Capital Projects leads the University of Wisconsin - Madison's Capital Projects team, overseeing the management and delivery of all capital projects exceeding $600,000. The team is comprised of project managers, project coordinators, and construction field representatives who drive consistent, high-quality project execution across a diverse and complex portfolio. This role provides strategic and operational leadership across the full project lifecycle, working closely with campus leaders, stakeholders, and external partners. The Director not only ensures successful project delivery, but also shapes capital delivery practices, drives process improvements, and strengthens performance across the program. Requirements

  • Minimum of eight (8) years’ professional experience in the design and construction industry
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience directly supervising personnel
  • Experience fostering skill development across a team of professionals and creating an inclusive work environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to provide a high level of customer service
  • Bachelor’s degree required; focus in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture or related discipline required
  • Eligibility to work in the United States
  • Pass an initial caregiver check
  • Complete annual training on the UW-Madison Sexual Harassment and Sexual Violence policy

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Construction Manager (CCM) certification
  • Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification
  • PMI-CP Construction Professional
  • Licensed Architect or Professional Engineer as outlined by State of Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services
  • OSHA 30 Certification

Responsibilities

  • Identifies opportunities and efficiencies to gain strategic alignment with design and construction of capital projects
  • Ensures regular, accurate project status and performance reviews and reports are provided
  • Develops and audits the unit budget and reporting documentation
  • Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • Develops, directs, and implements architectural and engineering project strategies and execution plans
  • Identifies, proposes, and implements new or revised unit operational and design policies, procedures and guidelines based on project plan and development
  • Serves as the unit liaison to internal stakeholder groups providing organizational information to align project objectives with overall strategic plans and initiatives
