About The Position

Hotel Royal Oak is seeking a Director of Business Development to create new sales rather than manage existing accounts. This independent boutique hotel in Royal Oak, Michigan, is entering a growth phase and needs a salesperson to drive revenue through new business generation. The role focuses on identifying and securing corporate negotiated accounts, corporate transient travel, group room blocks, wedding blocks, meetings, extended stays, project and crew business, sports groups, entertainment and production, private events, corporate gatherings, venue rentals, social events, and food & beverage events. Success is measured by the business created, not just sales activity.

Requirements

  • Experience selling hotels, hospitality, events, venues, or a closely related product.
  • Proven ability to prospect and cold call.
  • Comfortable walking into businesses and introducing yourself.
  • Understanding of corporate negotiated rates and group business.
  • Ability to respond to and convert RFPs.
  • Skill in conducting property tours.
  • Comfortable with negotiation.
  • Relentless follow-up skills.
  • Organizational skills to maintain a sales pipeline.
  • Understanding that activity without conversion is not success.
  • Enjoyment of networking.
  • Ability to learn Metro Detroit market quickly or existing knowledge of the area.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Event Temple, Mews, HotelREZ, Cvent or similar hospitality sales systems.
  • Hotel sales experience.
  • Existing network within Royal Oak, Oakland County, and Metro Detroit.

Responsibilities

  • Identify companies, organizations, planners and decision-makers who aren't currently doing business with Hotel Royal Oak.
  • Build prospect lists, make calls, send emails, and make introductions.
  • Walk into businesses and attend events to secure meetings.
  • Develop relationships with corporate travel managers, executive assistants, HR departments, office managers, event planners, wedding planners and venues, relocation companies, production companies, sports organizations, universities, hospitals and healthcare organizations, automotive companies and suppliers, local businesses, Chambers and business organizations, entertainment venues, travel planners, and community organizations.
  • Become a recognized contact in Metro Detroit for room bookings or event spaces.
  • Conduct property tours.
  • Build proposals.
  • Respond to RFPs.
  • Negotiate rates.
  • Create packages.
  • Follow up diligently.
  • Close deals.
  • Use hospitality sales and distribution technology stack including Event Temple, Mews, HotelREZ, and Cvent.
  • Maintain the sales pipeline, track activity, respond quickly, and keep account information clean.
  • Manage opportunities through the sales funnel and understand pipeline status.

Benefits

  • Base Salary: $40,000–$45,000
  • Commission: Uncapped progressive commission up to 15% on qualifying incremental revenue
  • Target Total Compensation: Approximately $75,000–$85,000+
  • High Performer Potential: $100,000+
  • Exceptional Performance: Uncapped Commission is paid on qualifying, actualized and collected new revenue attributable to the Director of Sales and is subject to the hotel's commission plan and profitability requirements.
