Director of Algorithms Engineering - Physics

ASML•San Jose, CA
•Hybrid

About The Position

ASML / HMI is seeking a Director to build and lead a new Physics Algorithms Engineering team within its e-beam inspection business. The team will develop physical modeling technologies that enhance next-generation semiconductor inspection solutions, including simulation and modeling capabilities for SEM image formation, electron-beam interactions, voltage contrast, and related physics-based methods. These capabilities will support traditional and AI-driven inspection algorithms to accelerate innovation and improve defect detection performance for customers. This highly visible leadership role combines team building, technical strategy, product delivery, and cross-functional collaboration. The Director will establish the technology roadmap, deliver production-ready algorithm solutions, and ensure solutions meet the performance, quality, and scalability needs of high-volume semiconductor manufacturing. The role also includes international travel of up to 10%, primarily within Asia, and is performed in a hybrid work environment with up to two remote days per week.

Requirements

  • PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
  • At least 4 years of engineering management experience leading teams of 5 or more engineers.
  • Demonstrated experience building and scaling engineering teams.
  • At least 10 years of technical leadership in physics-based modeling, computer vision, machine learning, or related fields.
  • Technical experience in physics-based modeling and simulation, including SEM image formation, electron-beam interactions, and voltage contrast.
  • Knowledge of computer vision and image processing, machine learning and AI, high-performance computing, GPU acceleration, and numerical optimization.
  • Experience with C++, CUDA, Python, and modern software development practices.
  • Experience with scientific computing and large-scale algorithm development.
  • Strong technical judgment and strategic thinking; ability to lead through ambiguity and drive execution.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Passion for building teams, coaching engineers, and developing talent.
  • Customer-focused mindset and a track record of delivering impactful solutions.
  • Ability to travel internationally up to 10%, primarily within Asia.
  • Ability to meet the stated physical demands, including sitting, walking, speaking, hearing, keyboarding and handling objects, and occasionally moving around campus; specific vision abilities include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
  • Ability to read and interpret data, information, and documents, and to observe and respond to people and situations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in the semiconductor industry, including supporting deployments in customer fabs, is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities
