About The Position

Vumedi is seeking a Director of Engineering to lead a small, senior US-based team of principal and staff engineers. This role involves setting the technical direction for AI, data, and platform initiatives that power how physicians find, watch, and learn from medical videos. The ideal candidate is a product-minded engineering leader who remains technically engaged. They will lead experienced engineers who have end-to-end ownership, collaborate with the CTO and Product teams on future development, and contribute to the growth of the US engineering organization. Vumedi is the world's largest video education platform for doctors, serving over half a million clinicians. The company is headquartered in Oakland, CA, with additional offices in Minneapolis, MN, and Zagreb, Croatia. Engineering has experienced significant growth, with substantial investment in AI-powered physician experiences.

Requirements

• 12+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 6 years in engineering leadership.
• Experience directly managing senior individual contributors (staff or principal engineers) and supporting their growth.
• Leadership experience across multiple technical domains such as data, ML/AI, platform/DevOps, backend, or personalization.
• A product engineering background with experience building and evolving customer-facing software, linking technical decisions to business outcomes.
• Sufficient current technical depth to engage credibly with senior engineers on architecture and trade-offs.
• Hands-on experience integrating AI into team development processes, beyond personal use of coding assistants.
• Experience working with international teams across different time zones, including comfort with early morning meetings.
• A proven track record of successful hiring and team building during organizational growth.

Nice To Haves

• Experience scaling engineering in a startup or growth-stage company.
• Experience shipping ML, recommendation, or personalization systems to production.
• Familiarity with Python/Django, PostgreSQL, Snowflake, and AWS.
• Experience in the healthcare, education, or content platform sectors.

Responsibilities

• Lead, coach, and grow a team of principal and staff engineers, providing them with meaningful ownership and opportunities to expand their scope and impact.
• Establish a clear technical strategy across data, AI, platform, and personalization, making necessary trade-offs.
• Collaborate with Product to define roadmaps for physician-facing experiences, balancing user experience, business objectives, speed, and long-term quality.
• Advance data initiatives from reporting to data products, prediction, and automation, working closely with the Analytics team.
• Promote AI adoption throughout the development lifecycle to enhance team efficiency and product quality.
• Maintain technical engagement by understanding architecture, participating in design discussions, and reviewing code.
• Work with engineering leaders in Zagreb on shared priorities, ownership, and cross-time zone communication.
• Implement efficient operating rhythms that foster accountability without creating bureaucracy.
• Recruit senior talent and contribute to the organization and growth of the US engineering team.
