About The Position

The University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Nursing (UMSON) is seeking a Director of Academic and Career Success at the Universities at Shady Grove in Rockville, MD. The Student Success Center offers academic and student programs/services related to nursing student academic success. The mission of UMSON is to develop pre-eminent leaders in nursing education, research, and practice. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Seven (7) years of progressive experience working with college students.
  • Four (4) years of work coordination, training, or supervision.
  • Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year of related experience. In instances where specific education and/or experience is required only directly related education and/or experience may be substituted.
  • Clery act designated job as campus security authorities (CSA) member and will comply with Clery Act requirements.
  • Knowledge of best practices and theoretical foundations in the field of adult learning, student development, supplemental instruction, advising, and student services, as well as all relevant federal, state, and local laws, university regulations, and programs/policies required for compliance.
  • Ability to maintain high standards with the work being performed and maintain understanding of emerging theories and trends in the field of student development and engagement.
  • Ability to respond to the unique needs presented by supporting the School of Nursing students and curriculum.
  • Ability to establish goals, structures, and processes necessary to implement a mission and strategic vision.
  • Possess strategic and analytical thinking skills with an ability to analyze data, solve problems, make decisions, and prioritize.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree or additional certification in social work, counseling, student affairs, education administration or related field can be substituted for two years of experience.
  • Juris Doctorate can be substituted for three years of experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide overall direction and leadership for all aspects of the Student Success Center’s operation; including the development, implementation, and evaluation of all student academic support and student services.
  • Creates a cohesive work team that works collaboratively to achieve unit’s goals. Oversees the recruitment, performance, and training of team members and continually reviews strengths and weaknesses of staff to maintain a well-trained, highly involved, and motivated team.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate strategic plan for office in alignment with the school’s strategic plan. Develops performance metrics to assure the Student Success Center meets quarterly and annual objectives.
  • Research best practices and foster improvements in school-wide policy/procedures related to student services, academic advising, student success, and student organization administration in conjunction with the Associate Dean for Student and Academic Services and relevant school and university leadership.
  • Collaborate with faculty from all departments as well as with upper level administrators within the school and university for setting budgets, and strategic goals and objectives for student retention initiatives, student support programs, student events, and other student services.
  • Collaborate with, and support, the Student and Academic Services staff in Baltimore and at the Universities at Shady Grove.
  • Oversees academic advising processes in Baltimore; advises assigned students and maintains student academic records and files to ensure they represent an accurate, complete and current account of student’s academic progress. Advising includes analyzing each student’s academic situation in order to develop and implement an individualized academic plan that promotes student success.
  • Manages communications and relevant reporting for school, university, and other outside entities.
  • Proactively represent the department through participation in campus and university or system wide meetings that relate to student services, retention, and/or academic success.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned, such as serving as an advocate and mediator on behalf of students.
