About The Position

The Director Musical is responsible for overseeing all aspects of a musical production, from selection and licensing to rehearsals, technical execution, and post-production. This role requires strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills to collaborate effectively with production staff, students, parents, and administrators. The Director Musical must ensure the production meets artistic and educational goals while adhering to budget and licensing requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate and collaborate regularly with production staff (Assistant Director, Technical Director, Performing Arts Center Manager).
  • Determine show dates and select the musical that best suits student abilities and production resources.
  • Secure licensing/performance rights and associated materials, ensuring compliance with agreements.
  • Reserve facilities and transportation using the district’s platform.
  • Serve as the primary contact for communication with students, parents, administrators, and vendors.
  • Create and communicate rehearsal and production schedules.
  • Lead regular production meetings with production staff.
  • Determine and communicate an itemized budget for the production process.
  • Maintain financial accounts, including purchase order requisitions and submission of invoices/receipts.
  • Determine projected production needs (scenic, costuming, props, lighting, sound, publicity) in collaboration with staff and students.
  • Prepare materials for auditions and schedule/advertise audition information.
  • Conduct auditions and call-backs, and cast the show in collaboration with staff.
  • Determine student production team roles and assignments.
  • Train student stage managers and production team on roles, responsibilities, safety, and facility equipment.
  • Collaborate with staff and students to design and build/purchase technical theatre needs within budget.
  • Conduct music and staging rehearsals and block the show.
  • Design publicity branding, logos, posters, and programs in collaboration with staff and students.
  • Oversee the distribution of publicity materials.
  • Set up ticketing using the district’s platform and coordinate publicity with the Communications Department.
  • Create opportunities for parent and guardian support.
  • Determine and communicate call times for rehearsals and performances.
  • Supervise students from the first call time through post-show duties for all rehearsals and performances.
  • Coordinate performance night needs with the Operations Department.
  • Oversee the strike of the show and post-show responsibilities, including securing proceeds.
  • Return any rented or borrowed materials.
