About The Position

United seeks a Director to lead our engagement in the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) and Southwest Power Pool (SPP) stakeholder processes. This role involves setting strategies, following developments in the stakeholder process, building relationships with RTO staff and other stakeholders, and advocating for reforms to remove barriers and expand opportunities for advanced energy technologies to compete in these markets. The Director will report to the Managing Director – Wholesale Markets, and will supervise one Senior Principal supporting United’s work in MISO/SPP. The Director will be part of United’s Expanding Wholesale Markets team, and will also work closely with United’s state regulatory and legislative staff. This role requires solutions-oriented, forward-looking thinking, and the ability to both dive into detailed regulatory issues and zoom out to respond to big-picture themes and trends. A successful candidate will be both technically capable and excited about the relationship-building aspects of the work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Political Science, Public Policy preferred, or applicable comparable experience, Master's degree is a plus
  • 7-10 years of professional experience which should include experience with RTOs/ISOs and/or FERC; engagement in the MISO and/or SPP region a plus
  • Experience managing and training a team
  • Strategic thinker: can look at the big picture goal and define how to get there
  • Exceptional professional writing skills, particularly regulatory filings
  • Interest and facility in market economics and understanding of market levers to scale clean energy
  • Entrepreneurial approach, flexible attitude, and ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral required; Candidates must be able to successfully develop and maintain productive relationships with members, industry stakeholders, policymakers, and other key contacts
  • Intellectual curiosity, inquisitive nature, analytical and excellent listening and problem-solving skills
  • Must be clean energy focused
  • Performance-oriented individual with a strong work ethic, demonstrated initiative and commitment to achieving goals
  • Must be willing to travel up to 30%

Responsibilities

  • Track developments across stakeholder groups in MISO and SPP, and work collaboratively with United team members on developing and implementing strategies to meet short and long-term policy objectives in MISO and SPP.
  • Work with United member companies to develop and reach consensus on policy positions on key issues. Facilitate member calls and lead policy discussions to coalesce member input and prioritize areas of interest and engagement. Keep members informed about developments in MISO/SPP.
  • Develop and file written comments and provide oral comments in stakeholder meetings on key issues that move us towards 100% advanced energy, including market reforms, generator interconnection, transmission planning, distributed energy resource and demand response participation, large load integration, and other related areas.
  • Work with United’s FERC leads to support comments and protests at FERC on issues related to MISO/SPP.
  • Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with coalition partners, allies, RTO staff, other stakeholders, and state commissioners.
  • Work with United communications staff to identify and seize opportunities to advance United’s advocacy goals through earned media, and showcase stories and evidence of the advanced energy resources providing value in wholesale markets. As needed, draft press statements, write blog posts, participate in webinars and conferences, and create opportunities to showcase advanced energy.
  • Travel on an as needed basis (up to 30%) to stakeholder meetings at MISO/SPP, conferences, meetings, and other efforts on behalf of United.
  • Working with the Managing Directors of the Wholesale Markets and Central region, support United’s annual portfolio planning process to identify strategic priorities for our work.
  • Manage/mentor/develop Associates, Principals and Senior Principals
