About The Position

The Director, Library Services provides leadership for the staff at the University Libraries across all campuses and serves as Campus Librarian on the assigned campus. The Director is responsible for ensuring that library services are provided in an efficient and effective manner across all campuses, while creating an environment that supports innovation, excellence in customer service, and accountability. The Director is knowledgeable about current and emergent technologies and leads innovative initiatives and information services that serve the current and future needs of faculty, students, and staff. This position is not eligible for remote or hybrid work and requires a regular physical presence on the assigned campus.

Requirements

  • MLS/MLIS or equivalent from an ALA-accredited program required.
  • Terminal doctoral degree (e.g., PhD, EdD, or equivalent) in a related discipline required.
  • A minimum of 8–10 years of progressively responsible professional experience in academic libraries, health sciences libraries, information sciences, or a closely related field.
  • Experience working collaboratively with faculty, academic leadership, and other university stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; internet navigation; file downloading; basic web editing; email; and instant messaging tools.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with and work well with a diverse staff and user population.
  • Ability to provide effective customer service.
  • Applied knowledge of spelling, grammar, and punctuation, as well as sentence and paragraph structure.
  • Ability to train and to supervise the activities of all library staff.
  • Advanced knowledge of institutional policies and procedures.
  • Expert knowledge of library services and their availability.
  • Advanced knowledge of pertinent functional practices and procedures.
  • Ability to think logically.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, student-centered environment.
  • Basic computer knowledge and skills including accurate keyboarding.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a health sciences education, graduate education, or academic health sciences library environment preferred.
  • Experience managing and designing websites is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Provides strategic direction for the institution to expand and adopt innovative approaches to delivery of library services in partnership with academic leadership.
  • Designs, develops, implements, and evaluates a library strategy that addresses graduate level student needs, and the program needs of faculty and staff.
  • Develops and maintains a centralized Library budget.
  • Manages, oversees, and directs staff, assigning staff duties and projects, and managing performance.
  • Recruits, hires, trains and supervises Library staff.
  • Creates, manages and participates in a regular, assigned schedule of monitoring the library’s chat service and general library email inbox, responding to questions and requests.
  • Maintains and manages the physical library space on the assigned campus.
  • Develops, implements, and reports on a system of service standards and metrics for the delivery of library and information services and resources.
  • Assists students and faculty with checking in / checking out / renewing library materials.
  • Provides customer service support to all library patrons, including answering basic questions and locating items.
  • Troubleshoots problems with library technology such as printers, copiers, computers, etc.
  • Trains, schedules, and supervises part-time student library workers.
  • Facilitates library space reservations for individual exams requiring ADA accommodations.
  • Orients new students to library services and collections.
  • Maintains borrower records in library information management system.
  • Notifies students of outstanding fines and collects monies.
  • Teaches information literacy and library skills to students and faculty, including single sessions, embedding in courses, and additional workshops or webinars.
  • Works with faculty members, program directors, and instructional designers to incorporate information literacy and library resources into courses and programs on their campus.
  • Provides reference and research assistance to students and faculty as needed.
  • Processes interlibrary loan and other resource requests.
  • Oversees the maintenance of library website and online content, including library guides, videos, and social media content.
  • Manages collection development and acquisitions for print resources and provides input for collection development of electronic resources.
  • Oversees the strategic direction of the institutional repository, SOAR, and manages Librarians who are assigned scholarly communications responsibilities.
  • Selects appropriate full text electronic databases and ensure students, faculty, and staff have online access to them.
  • Coordinates reference and document delivery support services for students, faculty, and staff through agreements with other educational institutions or alternate resources as needed.
  • Participates in University committees and local/state/national library association committees; engages in professional development including conferences, training, research, and/or publication.
  • Keeps abreast of current developments and cutting-edge trends in library and information resources provision, particularly those based on current and future technologies.
  • Develops outreach and engagement opportunities to support creative and effective use of library services and innovative technologies for teaching and learning.
  • Fosters a campus climate that values diversity among faculty, staff and student populations.
  • Collaborates with university stakeholders to develop and implement initiatives to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Identifies and executes initiatives that drive cultural change.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
