Director, Growth Engineering

ScribdVancouver, BC

About The Position

We're looking for a Director of Engineering to own the engineering vision, strategy, and execution for Scribd's growth organization. You will build modern growth and MarTech systems for a global audience of +200M monthly visitors and +2M paying subscribers across multiple brands. You'll lead an organization of approximately 25 engineers across three teams, directly managing a growth platform team while providing strategic and organizational leadership across the full group. You will operate at two altitudes simultaneously: hands-on with your platform team while setting direction, raising the bar, and removing obstacles across the broader org. This is a high-ownership leadership role for a Director who is both people-first and visionary: someone who is passionate about growth engineering and maximizing the potential of an already high-performing team. This role requires deep technical expertise in designing and shipping growth systems. You’ll partner closely with leaders in Product, Performance Marketing, Partnerships, Data Platform, and Analytics to build reliable foundations, and to translate growth strategy into high-leverage technical capabilities.

Requirements

  • Growth platform and martech depth. You've directly built or led the build-out of growth systems at a consumer subscription or marketplace business. You understand the modern stack and vendor landscape deeply.
  • Technical depth. You can make sound design decisions about web frontend, backend, and data-intensive systems, and you are comfortable with warehouse-centric architectures. You can lead teams through ambiguity and tradeoffs.
  • Proven engineering leadership. 10+ years of engineering experience with 4+ years leading multiple engineering teams, including managing managers. Track record of hiring and developing strong talent. You build trust, invest in people, and hold teams to a high bar.
  • Cross-functional partnership. You thrive in collaborative environments. You can code-switch between technical and business audiences. You build alignment through influence, not authority, and you're as credible in an executive review as you are in an architecture discussion.
  • Bias toward action. You move with urgency. You're comfortable making decisions with incomplete information and course-correcting as you learn. You thrive in ambiguity and can build structure where none exists.

Responsibilities

  • Define the growth engineering strategy. Audit the current state of our growth tooling, data pipelines, experimentation infrastructure, lifecycle messaging, analytics, and attribution. Develop a technical roadmap in close partnership with product leadership.
  • Build and lead the growth platform team. Take direct management of a 5-person team focused on our growth platform. Establish engineering practices and define the team charter. Create team identity and build the team to full strength.
  • Lead a high-performing growth engineering organization. Provide organizational leadership across all three growth engineering teams. Assess team boundaries, build alignment on shared engineering standards, and strengthen the culture of experimentation rigor. Maintain engineering quality while strategically balancing speed and technical debt.
  • Drive agentic engineering adoption. Lead the adoption of agentic engineering practices within the growth organization. Identify how AI can accelerate delivery while maintaining high quality.
  • Be a strategic partner. Serve as the engineering counterpart to your peer product leader in the growth pillar. Build strong relationships across Product, Design, Marketing, Analytics, Data Science, and Partnerships. Create visibility into growth engineering's impact through business reviews, roadmap updates, and clear reporting that connects technical work to business outcomes.
  • Raise the bar across Scribd engineering. Contribute to the broader engineering organization through leadership forums, architecture reviews, hiring, and engineering-wide initiatives. Model engineering excellence and be a collaborative peer leader among Scribd's engineering directors.
