About The Position

Scribd, Inc. is seeking a Director of Engineering to lead the engineering vision, strategy, and execution for its growth organization. This role involves building modern growth and MarTech systems for a global audience of over 200 million monthly visitors and 2 million paying subscribers across multiple brands. The Director will manage an organization of approximately 25 engineers across three teams, directly overseeing a growth platform team and providing strategic leadership for the entire group. The position requires operating at both a hands-on level with the platform team and a strategic level across the broader organization. This is a high-ownership leadership role for a visionary, people-first Director passionate about growth engineering and maximizing the potential of a high-performing team. It demands deep technical expertise in designing and shipping growth systems, and close collaboration with leaders in Product, Performance Marketing, Partnerships, Data Platform, and Analytics to build reliable foundations and translate growth strategy into technical capabilities.

Requirements

  • Directly built or led the build-out of growth systems at a consumer subscription or marketplace business.
  • Deep understanding of the modern stack and vendor landscape.
  • Sound design decisions about web frontend, backend, and data-intensive systems.
  • Comfort with warehouse-centric architectures.
  • Ability to lead teams through ambiguity and tradeoffs.
  • 10+ years of engineering experience.
  • 4+ years leading multiple engineering teams, including managing managers.
  • Track record of hiring and developing strong talent.
  • Ability to build trust, invest in people, and hold teams to a high bar.
  • Thrive in collaborative environments.
  • Ability to code-switch between technical and business audiences.
  • Build alignment through influence, not authority.
  • Credibility in executive reviews and architecture discussions.
  • Bias toward action and moving with urgency.

Responsibilities

  • Define the growth engineering strategy, auditing current growth tooling, data pipelines, experimentation infrastructure, lifecycle messaging, analytics, and attribution.
  • Develop a technical roadmap in close partnership with product leadership.
  • Build and lead the growth platform team, taking direct management of a 5-person team focused on the growth platform, establishing engineering practices, defining the team charter, and creating team identity.
  • Lead a high-performing growth engineering organization by providing organizational leadership across all three growth engineering teams, assessing team boundaries, building alignment on shared engineering standards, and strengthening the culture of experimentation rigor.
  • Maintain engineering quality while strategically balancing speed and technical debt.
  • Drive agentic engineering adoption within the growth organization, identifying how AI can accelerate delivery while maintaining high quality.
  • Serve as the engineering counterpart to the peer product leader in the growth pillar, building strong relationships across Product, Design, Marketing, Analytics, Data Science, and Partnerships.
  • Create visibility into growth engineering's impact through business reviews, roadmap updates, and clear reporting that connects technical work to business outcomes.
  • Contribute to the broader engineering organization through leadership forums, architecture reviews, hiring, and engineering-wide initiatives, modeling engineering excellence and acting as a collaborative peer leader among Scribd's engineering directors.
