About The Position

The Policy Director is a highly skilled, experienced professional responsible for advising Walmart, Inc. and its leadership on public policy issues at all levels of government. This role is well-suited for individuals with strong public policy experience and the ability to lead on complex, evolving issues. The Policy Director will serve as an expert advisor across a broad portfolio of policy areas aligned with Walmart’s purpose of helping people save money and live better. The Global Public Policy (GPP) team at Walmart identifies risks and opportunities in public policy to support the company’s license to operate and create opportunities for over 2.2 million associates. The team serves millions of customers worldwide while building shared value in communities. It leads strategic communication and stakeholder engagement efforts, aligning business goals with regulatory and societal expectations. The team develops and executes comprehensive advocacy strategies, manages complex issues, and fosters collaboration across functions and external partners to influence policy outcomes that support Walmart’s long-term success and reputation.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of applied public policy or government affairs experience, with demonstrated success influencing policy outcomes; corporate experience preferred.
  • Strong understanding of policymaking processes across state/local, federal, and/or global levels, and how the private sector engages effectively within them.
  • Proven ability to advise senior leaders on complex policy issues and recommend clear, actionable paths forward.
  • Experience navigating matrixed organizations, building cross‑functional partnerships, and managing stakeholder relationships with credibility and integrity.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Economics, Communications, or related area and 8 years’ experience in government relations, public policy research, legislative affairs, regulatory analysis, or related area OR 10 years’ experience in government relations, public policy research, legislative affairs, regulatory analysis, or related area

Responsibilities

  • Lead public policy strategy across priority issue areas, providing subject‑matter expertise and strategic counsel to business partners and senior leaders.
  • Analyze and monitor legislative, regulatory, and administrative developments at the state, federal, and global levels that may impact Walmart, its associates, or customers.
  • Develop and execute strategic policy plans in partnership with internal teams to advance Walmart’s public policy priorities.
  • Build and manage relationships with external stakeholders, including industry associations, NGOs, policymakers, and subject‑matter experts, to advance shared objectives and strengthen understanding of Walmart’s role in society.
