About The Position

Microsoft's Washington State & Global Employee Engagement (WSGEE) team sits at the intersection of public policy, philanthropy, and employee engagement. The team is responsible for strengthening the company's long-term trust, credibility, and impact across Washington State, while also driving employee giving and volunteerism across the world. The Global Employee Engagement team is seeking a Director to lead volunteerism across the company. This role owns the strategy, design, and governance of Microsoft's company-wide volunteer programs. From that foundation, the Director builds and oversees the full spectrum of engagement, from civic participation and skills-based service to nonprofit board service, so that employees strengthen the organizations and communities they serve while growing their own skills and leadership. The Director also builds the internal and external partnerships and the guidelines and policies that make these programs possible, leads the team's assessment of what to scale, evolve, or retire, and pilots new pathways in Washington State before extending them nationally and globally. Looking ahead, the Director will help to define what the next generation of employee engagement looks like, from AI-enabled volunteering to new forms of civic participation, as the expectations of employees and communities evolve. The Director works directly with senior leaders across CELA and Microsoft, influences policy and programs that reach employees in every country where Microsoft operates, and owns innovation across volunteerism, civic engagement, and social impact at a scale few organizations can match. The Director will report to the Senior Director, Global Employee Engagement, on the Washington State & Global Employee Engagement team. This is an individual contributor role that leads through the portfolio, through vendor and agency partners, and through influence across Microsoft rather than through direct reports. The position will be based at the Microsoft Campus in Redmond, Washington.

Requirements

• Master's Degree AND 6+ years work experience in corporate social responsibility (CSR), philanthropies, corporate affairs, government affairs, business and international development, or related area OR Bachelor's Degree AND 8+ years work experience in corporate social responsibility (CSR), philanthropies, corporate affairs, government affairs, business and international development, or related area OR equivalent experience.
• 4+ years' experience managing corporate social responsibility (CSR), social impact, and/or employee engagement programs.
• Demonstrated experience building and leading employee volunteer, civic engagement, or board service programs at a large corporation, including the platforms, systems, and policies that support them.
• Demonstrated experience leading highly cross-functional teams in a matrixed organization.
• Forward-looking perspective on the future of employee engagement, including how AI and new forms of participation can expand what employees can do for their communities.
• Excellent communicator, with experience leading or enabling grassroots campaigns.
• Experience developing and writing program policy and guidelines.
• Understanding of the national and international employee engagement landscape, with deep knowledge of the Puget Sound civic and nonprofit community.
• People or team management experience, including developing talent and managing vendor partners.
• Experience engaging in the community as a volunteer, board member, or through civic or policy-aligned activities.

Responsibilities

• Set the strategy and multi-year roadmap for the volunteer engagement portfolio, manage the budgets, define success measures and documented processes, and direct the resources and vendor partners that deliver it.
• Lead cross-functional collaborators and partners toward shared outcomes, delivering through influence rather than direct authority.
• Lead the ongoing assessment of the portfolio, recommending what to scale, evolve, consolidate, or retire, and establishing the criteria the team uses to prioritize.
• Identify, build, and manage strategic partnerships with nonprofit, civic, and academic organizations that enable these programs and position Microsoft as a trusted, long-term community partner.
• Serve as a leader on the Global Employee Engagement team and a trusted advisor to leaders across CELA and Microsoft on employee engagement.
• Lead Microsoft's company-wide volunteer programs, the most common way employees engage, so that every employee has clear, relevant ways to serve.
• Own guidelines, eligibility, and program policy end to end, from design through implementation, ensuring programs operate with integrity and in alignment with Microsoft and CELA standards.
• Lead the systems and infrastructure that enable volunteering at Microsoft, including the platform and data behind it, and evolve them to changing needs.
• Build and oversee the spectrum of engagement, from civic participation and skills-based service to nonprofit board service, so employees strengthen the organizations and communities they serve while growing their own skills and leadership.
• Develop new pathways that reach more employees and more moments in their careers, including AI-enabled volunteering and new forms of engagement, piloting in Washington State before extending nationally and globally.
• Build, launch, and assess at least two new programs in the first 18 months, from concept and pilot through evaluation and a clear recommendation to scale, evolve, or retire.
• Serve as the integrated go-to-market lead for the Global Employee Engagement team: plan launches and activations for Microsoft Give's flagship moments in partnership with the team and with Marketing, HR, Communications, Government Affairs, and Philanthropy so campaigns and key moments land as one coordinated effort.
• Coordinate Microsoft Give & volunteerism storytelling that authentically reflects employee and community impact, and represent the programs with internal leaders, partners, and at external events as needed.
