Requirements

  • Degree in Business and/or finance. Masters degree preferred.
  • Bachelor's Degree in finance, accounting or related field required.
  • 10 years of accounting/financial related experience required.
  • 5 years supervisory experience or equivalent required.
  • Ability to translate complex planning information into clear executive-level insights
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (e.g., fluency in report writing and presentations)
  • Leadership presence (e.g., ability to deal effectively and maintain collaborative relationships with Company senior management and other key stakeholders)
  • Effective interpersonal skills (e.g., persuasion, negotiation, listening, cooperation, tact, diplomacy, problem solving, internal consulting), including the ability to influence without direct authority
  • Strong process, project, and program management skills
  • Strong quantitative skills (e.g., analytical, technical, problem solving)
  • Effective people management skills (e.g., planning, organizing, recruiting, controlling, and leading individual staff and teams)

Responsibilities

  • Lead the finance function for multiple states or lines of business that supports achieving overall American Water goals.
  • Directs the business planning and reforecasting (landing zone) process, financial and management reporting activities, the design and management of internal controls, financial analysis and modeling, rate case support, business development support, and ensuring compliance with generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Functions as a financial business partner, working cross functionally to communicate, align on best practice, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Serve as a key member of the state or LOB executive management team - participating in strategy development and leading the resulting financial plan in order to achieve targets and objectives that support the overall corporate plan
  • Coordination and quality of financial reporting - monthly and annual reporting, business planning, monthly reforecasting, and analysis of financial risk
  • Evaluation of new business proposals - review financial analysis and modeling of proposed growth opportunities to assure financial viability for stakeholders
  • Provide financial guidance and serve as point of contact for all other finance-related activities for area of responsibility - rate filings, external audits, internal audits, financing activities, etc.
  • Build and manage a strong team of finance professionals, including coaching, succession planning, etc.
  • Other special projects and ad hoc assignments
