About The Position

Join a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as the Director of Facilities Infrastructure & Engineering. We are seeking a visionary leader to direct the growth and provide oversight for approximately 85 new infrastructure projects valued at approximately 39 million dollars annually. Must have a proven track record of construction projects related to Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Fire Protection, Roofing and Building Façades, preferably in a hospital environment. The successful candidate will provide strategic leadership to ensure successful execution from inception to closeout. Direct and coordinate all functions of the Infrastructure & Engineering staff within Facilities Planning, Design and Construction (FPD&C) who are responsible for all phases of project management. Serves along with infrastructure team as MEP systems expert for FPD&C and acts as the MEP systems technical resource to Plant Department. Oversees the facility wide plan to manage energy efficiency initiatives, emission goals, and energy management systems including the identification and development of process improvements related to the execution of infrastructure projects to improve quality, cost, delivery schedule, and other critical elements of performance. Develops and assists in the prioritization of annual utility and multi-year capital infrastructure budgets. Reporting to the Executive Director of Facilities Operations, Renovation & Construction Management, this Director is a strategic business partner. An innovative critical thinker and influential leader, the successful candidate will initially have 5 direct reports. They actively manage human, capital, and operational resources to support infrastructure projects valued in the millions, plus an annual utility budget of $30 million plus.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Construction Management field required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of related work experience managing all aspects of construction and infrastructure related projects, preferably in a hospital environment including Infection Control protocols and mitigation strategies.
  • Understanding of typical Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Fire Protection, Roofing, and Façade systems and equipment.
  • Experience managing contractors and sub-contractors to specific contractual requirements and to fixed budgets.
  • Experience managing consulting Architects, Engineers, and professional service firms.
  • Experience analyzing construction cost and construction schedules, knowledge of the importance of data for troubleshooting construction problems, and the ability to provide analysis to answer questions.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to speak articulately in high-level forums and to answer difficult questions with confidence.
  • Ability to work independently identifying best approaches to problems and present solutions to Executive Director or other Leadership.
  • Prior experience managing multiple projects simultaneously and working effectively in multidisciplinary groups.
  • High degree of computer competency, including familiarity with word processing, spreadsheet, and schedule programs. Utilization of eBuilder Project Management Software.
  • Working knowledge of construction requirements in hospital, research, educational laboratories, or other sensitive commercial or industrial areas.
  • Must have ability to access areas that are physically restrictive (e.g., building mechanical rooms, roofs, sub-basements, crawl spaces) for routine and investigative field checks and surveys)

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Engineering or MBA preferred.
  • Licensed PE or LEED AP a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Leads, directs and coordinates all functions of the Project Managers assigned to the Infrastructure & Engineering organization within Facilities Planning, Design and Construction (FPD&C) Department.
  • Directs and coordinates day to day activities of assigned staff.
  • Responsible for staff assignments, prioritization of tasks/projects, project schedules/budgets and oversight of all phases of project execution.
  • Responsible for all phases of project management for infrastructure projects to include project planning and the construction process.
  • Project planning includes, must is not limited to, RFP development, reviewing design and construction documents, obtaining necessary permits, performing value engineering, project scheduling and developing project budgets.
  • Construction process includes, but is not limited to, coordination of logistics, the permit process, project documentation, reconciling cost estimates, and managing change order requests.
  • Develops and manages the 3-Year strategic infrastructure upgrade plan for the organization.
  • Provides routine and summary reports on project management activities including project scope, project status, schedule and budget.
  • Performs contract reviews as necessary.
  • Oversees the facility wide plan to manage energy efficiency initiatives, emission goals, and energy management systems managed by the Facility Engineer.
  • Develops and assists in the prioritization of FPD&C’s annual and multi-year capital infrastructure budgets.
  • Develops individual construction cost estimates and project budgets.
  • Coordinates activities of field engineers and technical staff completing the annual Facility Condition Assessment (FCA) review of existing facilities.
  • Oversees the utility budgeting (operational and capital) activities for all Facilities Design and Construction cost centers.
  • This includes gathering preliminary budget projections, service and supplies, budget preparation and analysis, budget presentation, and monthly reporting.
  • Demonstrates personal leadership qualities and business acumen essential to operate effectively within the institution.
  • As part of the leadership team, this position will be instrumental in reinforcing and sustaining UCM’s E4 Leadership Culture.
