Director Digital Manufacturing Innovation

Amgen•Providence, RI
•$175,419 - $237,331

About The Position

The Director, Digital Manufacturing Innovation (DMI), is the global business leader for digital innovation across Amgen Manufacturing, based in Global Manufacturing Strategies and Technologies (GMST). The role identifies manufacturing opportunities where digital products, data, analytics, AI, and automation can create value; sets and manages the portfolio; and leads initiatives from idea and pilot through supported deployment, adoption, and network expansion. The Director ensures each priority has a product team, business owner, reliable data, effective solution, and measurable results. The Director leads a global team and partners with manufacturing sites, Digital Site Leaders, product owners, Engineering, Process Development, Quality, Supply Chain, Finance, Technology, AI and Data, and Amgen India delivery teams. The role sets portfolio direction, business requirements, readiness expectations, and scale decisions, while product and technology teams own technical design and delivery and sites own local implementation, adoption, and sustained performance. The position establishes the global DMI roadmap and portfolio process; supports connected manufacturing products; strengthens data ownership, stewardship, and readiness; sets priorities for AI and analytics; and guides deployment, adoption, and value realization across the network. It also builds team capability and partnerships, resolves trade-offs, and communicates investment, scaling, improvement, or retirement recommendations to senior leaders. Success is measured by portfolio focus and the movement of priority capabilities beyond pilots into reliable, supported use. Measures include data quality and ownership, site readiness, adoption in daily work, timely decisions, network reuse, and sustained benefits in safety, quality, supply, productivity, asset performance, throughput, and capacity. Benefits and targets are agreed with sites, Finance, and Manufacturing leadership.

  • Demonstrated ability to apply analytical judgment, lead cross-functional teams, build strong working relationships, and translate complex manufacturing and technology issues into clear, executable plans.
  • Experience leading digital, data, or technology transformation across a global biopharmaceutical manufacturing network, with practical knowledge of GxP operations, validation, and data integrity.
  • A record of taking digital products or AI and analytics solutions from concept to supported production and multi-site use, with measurable manufacturing results.
  • Experience establishing business data ownership and stewardship, common definitions, data quality standards, and integration across manufacturing systems and enterprise platforms.
  • Practical experience applying AI, machine learning, generative AI, or predictive analytics to manufacturing, including readiness testing, human oversight, and ongoing monitoring.
  • Demonstrated people leadership, talent development, portfolio management, and coordination of work across global teams and delivery partners.
  • Strong business and financial judgment, change leadership, and continuous improvement skills, including prioritizing limited resources and managing value across a product’s lifecycle.
  • Clear executive communication, negotiation, facilitation, and conflict resolution skills; flexibility to work across regions and time zones and travel as business needs require.

Responsibilities

  • Set and maintain the global DMI roadmap, translating Manufacturing priorities into a focused portfolio of digital, data, analytics, AI, and automation opportunities.
  • Prioritize initiatives based on patient and supply impact, safety, quality, business value, data and site readiness, risk, cost, and potential for reuse across the network.
  • Lead a consistent process from idea intake and discovery through pilot, production, and network expansion; ensure initiatives have a problem statement, sponsor, accountable owner, resource plan, success measures, and decision points.
  • Provide recommendations and escalations to senior Manufacturing leaders; align with Digital Site Leaders on site roadmaps, identify reusable site innovations, and evaluate emerging technologies through focused tests.
  • Partner with product owners to define manufacturing needs, outcomes, roadmaps, and delivery priorities for connected operations, digital performance management, electronic workflows, workforce tools, production scheduling, and capacity planning.
  • Set expectations for testing, release readiness, user experience, support, and lifecycle ownership; promote practical, reliable, secure, integrated products and shared standards while accommodating justified local variation.
  • Establish business ownership and stewardship for priority Manufacturing data; work with enterprise data and system owners on common terms, master and reference data, data sources, and measurable quality standards.
  • Assess data readiness and lead correction of critical gaps; make priority data discoverable, appropriately accessible, compatible across systems, and reusable.
  • Build a network of site data champions and connect source-system stewardship to reliable data products; resolve ownership, KPI definition, quality, and integration gaps with named owners and due dates.
  • Set priorities for AI, machine learning, advanced analytics, and generative AI with Manufacturing and enterprise Technology and AI and Data teams; define problem statements, requirements, baselines, and expected outcomes.
  • Move successful AI and analytics pilots into supported production only when representative testing, data quality, human oversight, monitoring, support, and lifecycle ownership are in place.
  • Work with Quality, Cybersecurity, and Technology teams on validation, data integrity, access, and change controls; escalate unresolved risks before launch or expansion.
  • Plan deployment waves with sites and enterprise partners based on business priority, product maturity, and local readiness; confirm people, integration, training, and support needs before setting launch dates.
  • Require a named site sponsor and business owner, engaged users, and a practical readiness and adoption plan before go-live; partner with sites on workflow changes, training, launch support, and stabilization.
  • Measure adoption separately from deployment or user counts; establish baselines and work with sites and Finance to confirm benefits in error and defect prevention, workforce productivity, asset performance, throughput, and capacity.
  • Use evidence to decide whether to expand, improve, or retire solutions.
  • Build, lead, and develop a global team of digital product, data, and innovation professionals; set goals and accountability, strengthen product and data skills, and develop succession.
  • Create partnerships across Manufacturing, Engineering, Process Development, Quality, Supply Chain, Finance, Technology, AI and Data, and Amgen India; resolve competing priorities, make trade-offs transparent, and communicate decisions, risks, and progress to senior leaders.
