About The Position

The director is accountable and responsible for the leadership and management of the assigned services on a 24-hour basis. The director translates the objectives, plans, policies and procedures of the hospital and nursing service department into effective actions to ensure quality patient care and manages the human and material resources of the unit to provide cost effective care.

Requirements

  • Current Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which services will be provided or current multi-state Registered Nurse license through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing.
  • Five (5) years nursing experience with at least two (2) years in a management or administrative position.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in related field, Masters of Science in Nursing.
  • Specialty certification desirable.
  • Clinical experience in nursing practice.

Responsibilities

  • Develops implements and promotes strategies for the delivery of patient care at the unit level which is based on the requirements of the service while achieving positive patient outcomes in a teaching environment.
  • Ensures department is in compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Promotes the recruitment and retention of a qualified nursing staff.
  • Assumes responsibility for the patient focused performance improvement process engaging staff participation in multidisciplinary activities conducted for the purpose of improving the quality and reducing the cost of care. Develops and monitors appropriate operational performance measures. Reviews outcomes and improves operational systems to ensure continued improvement.
  • Performs on-going goal setting, peer review, and performance reviews that provide objective, constructive feedback regarding strengths and opportunities for improvement, including developmental plans for each employee.
  • Coaches and counsels to correct identified performance deficiencies, developing plans which establish goals, provides follow-up and follows established hospital policies.
  • Enforces hospital and nursing services policies and ensures that staff are meeting the established standards of practice.
  • Monitors staff satisfaction and takes appropriate corrective action.
  • Devises a communication system to keep all personnel informed about the unit and hospital. Has a mechanism in place to provide interaction with all employees on all shifts.
  • Ensures the appropriate delegation of departmental activities. Supervises delegated activities to assure effective completion.
  • Fosters a competent staff through the provision of orientation, in-services, continuing education programs and competency validation programs.
  • Supports the education of students in nursing, medicine and allied health professions. Supports and participates in ongoing research projects.
  • Participates in professional activities and organizations.
  • Develops evidence-based, cost-effective staffing patterns; ensures that schedules appropriately utilize staff to provide care.
  • Maintains budget records, approves payroll documents.
  • Analyzes trends to develop long range plans for budget needs.
  • Maintains patient acuity system to provide a foundation for the staffing budget.
  • Collaborates with medical staff, ancillary/support directors and other personnel in resolving issues and promoting and planning optimal patient care.
  • Participates in outreach activities in the community, i.e. Speaker's Bureau, in order to educate and/or promote good relationships.
  • Chairs and participates in committees and completes additional projects as assigned.
