About The Position

ASCO is seeking a Director, Content Strategy and Brand Management to lead the Integrated Marketing and Communications (ICM) Department. This role will provide strategic oversight for a unified brand and content strategy, ensuring alignment with the mission and values of ASCO and Conquer Cancer. The Director will be responsible for developing a comprehensive storytelling ecosystem to enhance ASCO's reputation as a leader in cancer care, drive philanthropic impact, and improve member engagement. This position requires balancing strategic brand positioning and narrative architecture with high-volume content and creative production. The role can be remote or based at the primary location in Alexandria, VA.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Strategic Communications, Journalism, Brand Management or related field
  • 10 - 12 years of experience in brand and content leadership
  • At least 5 years in a senior role overseeing strategy, storytelling, and technical production
  • Proven track record of leading multi-channel storytelling campaigns for complex, multi-entity organizations
  • Experience managing high-volume content operations across digital channels
  • Experience in a healthcare, medical society, or clinical environment with the ability to translate complex scientific topics into accessible language
  • Experience with fundraising marketing and/or working in a professional association/nonprofit organization
  • Deep knowledge of the modern digital landscape
  • Proficiency with AP Style
  • 5 years of supervisory experience

Responsibilities

  • Drive an integrated, channel-agnostic digital, multimedia storytelling strategy that elevates the organization's reputation as a timely, trusted authority in cancer care and accelerates philanthropic impact.
  • Collaborate with digital channel leads, global program strategy teams, enterprise communications, and public affairs teams on content strategy, distribution, and performance across various platforms.
  • Manage the campaign review process, unifying editorial copy approvals with visual design direction.
  • Establish and enforce content governance plans, lifecycle standards, quality guardrails, and taxonomy frameworks.
  • Collaborate with the Performance Marketing team to ensure digital content leverages SEO insights for maximum audience reach.
  • Play a key role in developing and optimizing agile content workflows, team processes, and division standard operating procedures.
  • Partner with IT to drive the architecture, organization, and adoption of the Digital Asset Management System (DAMS).
  • Define operational guardrails, copyright compliance workflows, and ethical standards for generative AI tool usage.
  • Conduct routine visual and message-compliance audits across digital properties and materials.
  • Oversee the management of ASCO’s staff brand portal, self-service toolkits, and templates.
  • Champion department-wide education initiatives and professional development for ICM staff.
  • Manage branding and content operational budgets, directing external agency contracts, and serving as the primary contact for legal on brand-related issues.
  • Supervise, mentor, and synchronize the efforts of the Content Strategy and Brand Management team, staying current with communication trends and providing hands-on support when needed.
  • Create and oversee the long-term visual storytelling strategy for ASCO and Conquer Cancer entities.
  • Align all enterprise-wide marketing and digital communication activities to ensure consistent execution.
  • Collaborate with marketing strategists and market research staff to translate data into engaging brand experiences.
