The Director, Clinical Engineering is a key leadership role responsible for shaping the future of clinical engineering services within CHEO and its regional partnerships. This position provides strategic and operational leadership for clinical engineering services across the organization, overseeing the regional service model and leading a team of over 70 employees serving numerous healthcare facilities and clinical entities. The role is crucial for ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient management of clinical technology to support high-quality patient care. The Director will lead departmental strategies, quality improvement initiatives, risk management, and operational priorities aligned with CHEO’s mission. As a trusted advisor, the Director contributes to corporate planning, ensuring biomedical engineering services are innovative, sustainable, and responsive to evolving healthcare needs. This role requires a collaborative leader who can build strong relationships with internal departments, healthcare partners, vendors, and regional customers to support service excellence, equipment reliability, and long-term capital planning. The position also focuses on identifying opportunities for operational efficiencies, cost savings, and service enhancements in clinical equipment management. The Director is responsible for overall departmental leadership, including operational oversight, financial stewardship, and people leadership, managing budgets, overseeing procurement, establishing performance metrics, and fostering a culture of respect, accountability, and continuous learning.

Requirements

  • University degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Approximately ten years of related experience.
  • Minimum of five years in a management or leadership capacity.
  • Experience within healthcare or biomedical engineering environments is strongly valued.
  • Exceptional analytical, communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to manage complex projects, lead multidisciplinary teams and oversee significant operational budgets.
  • Strong understanding of healthcare technology management, procurement practices, quality standards and occupational health and safety legislation is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Provides strategic and operational leadership for clinical engineering services across the organization.
  • Oversees CHEO’s regional clinical engineering service model.
  • Provides leadership to over 70 employees within the clinical engineering service team.
  • Ensures the safe, reliable and efficient management of clinical technology that supports high-quality patient care across the hospital and partner organizations.
  • Leads the planning, implementation and evaluation of departmental strategies, quality improvement initiatives, risk management systems and operational priorities.
  • Contributes expertise to corporate planning and decision-making as a trusted advisor to senior leadership.
  • Ensures biomedical engineering services remain innovative, sustainable and responsive to evolving healthcare needs and legislative requirements.
  • Builds strong relationships across clinical, operational and external stakeholder groups.
  • Works closely with internal departments, healthcare partners, vendors and regional customers to support service excellence, equipment reliability and long-term capital planning.
  • Identifies opportunities for operational efficiencies, cost savings and service enhancements related to clinical equipment procurement, maintenance and utilization.
  • Responsible for the overall leadership and management of the department, including operational oversight, financial stewardship and people leadership.
  • Leads departmental planning, manages operating and capital budgets, oversees contract negotiations and procurement processes, establishes performance metrics and ensures the effective delivery of biomedical engineering services.
