Director, Business & Legal Affairs

Blumhouse ProductionsLos Angeles, CA
Onsite

About The Position

As one of the most prolific and recognizable names in film, Blumhouse Productions moves fast, operates lean, and punches well above its weight. The company is seeking a Director of Business & Legal Affairs to join its Film studio. This role reports to the SVP of Business & Legal Affairs (Film) and supports the SVP of Business & Legal Affairs (Independent Film). The Director will serve as the drafting engine at the center of the business affairs function, working closely with senior dealmakers to translate negotiations into tight, well-crafted agreements. The position also involves independently handling smaller deals as experience and bandwidth allow. This role is ideal for a lawyer who genuinely loves the craft of drafting and wants to be deeply involved in a high volume of interesting projects.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in entertainment law, with meaningful exposure to the development and production of filmed entertainment content.
  • Experience at a law firm, studio, or production company with a strong drafting practice — candidates who have done significant transactional drafting work are strongly preferred.
  • J.D. and active membership in the California State Bar (or eligibility and willingness to register as In-House Counsel).
  • Exceptional drafting skills and a genuine enthusiasm for the craft.
  • Ability to manage a high volume of concurrent matters with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work proactively and reliably under tight deadlines in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Strong collaborative instincts and ability to support and communicate effectively with senior dealmakers.
  • A flexible mind with a willingness to tackle matters outside area of expertise.
  • Must have a cooperative, positive, and team-oriented approach to work.

Responsibilities

  • Draft, revise and negotiate a high volume of development and production agreements, including above- and below-the-line talent agreements (producers, directors, actors, department heads), literary acquisitions, writer agreements, underlying rights agreements, and other development-related matters, in support of senior Business & Legal Affairs staff.
  • Independently negotiate and close lower-complexity deals.
  • Maintain and update standard form agreements, deal templates, and internal policies in collaboration with senior team members.
  • Manage deal tracking, correspondence, and documentation across active development projects to ensure continuity and accuracy.
  • Assist in evaluating underlying rights and chain-of-title issues.
  • Support senior staff in advising on business and legal risks, including clearances, intellectual property, guild compliance, and other production-related legal matters.
  • Stay current on legal, regulatory, and industry developments as they affect the development, production, and distribution of content — with particular attention to evolving guild and union frameworks (SAG-AFTRA, WGA, DGA), including the use of AI and issues such as digital replica rights and synthetic performance.
