About The Position

GHD is seeking a Technical Director in Rock Mechanics for its Montreal team. This role requires deep expertise in geomechanics, underground excavation, and innovative engineering solutions for public and private clients. The rock mechanics group is known for its leading-edge field and engineering practices, including digital mapping, 3D geological modeling, and advanced numerical modeling (2D/3D, rock-structure interaction). The successful candidate will join a dynamic team of over fifteen professionals in Quebec, collaborating on major projects across North America, South America, Australia, and beyond. The team's ambition is to be an industry leader in Canada, making a significant impact on community transformation through large-scale public transit and hydroelectric development projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Geological or Civil Engineering.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in rock mass classification and the design of underground or open-pit excavations.
  • Member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ).
  • Team spirit, focused on performance and goal achievement.
  • Advanced skills in writing technical reports.
  • Bilingualism (French and English) spoken and written.
  • ASP Construction card.
  • Valid driver's license and vehicle.
  • Dynamism and ability to work in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Recognized technical leadership in rock mechanics and underground excavation.
  • Successful development and growth of strong client relationships.
  • Proven experience in project management and time management, including budget preparation, work programs, offers, tenders, technical submissions, and reports.
  • Recognized skills in managing project teams in a multidisciplinary consulting engineering environment.
  • Ability to mentor and develop junior staff.
  • Commitment to maintaining a healthy and safe work environment.
  • Practical knowledge of applicable Canadian and Quebec standards, as well as current industry guidelines and practices.

  • Second cycle degree with specialization in rock mechanics, soil-structure interaction, or numerical modeling.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise a team of rock mechanics professionals, delivering optimized geomechanical concepts and efficient, safe construction methods.
  • Write and/or approve technical notes and study reports (rock mass classification, geotechnical baseline reports, feasibility studies, rock slope stabilization design, tunnel/cavern design).
  • Supervise geological/geophysical modeling and guide the positioning of exploration boreholes as well as data interpretation.
  • Develop and/or approve plans and specifications for temporary or permanent rock mechanics support systems.
  • Act as a technical expert, supporting engineers in specialized calculations and numerical modeling.
  • Participate in major multidisciplinary projects and tender processes, in collaboration with other teams and partners.
  • Recommend and implement innovative technical developments to improve project outcomes and meet user needs.
  • Conduct research, contribute to R&D, and write technical articles in rock mechanics.
  • Design and implement complex exploration plans and analyze key data trends.
  • Collaborate with GHD's global network in underground and rock excavation, share best practices, and organize internal knowledge-sharing sessions.
  • Mentor and coach team members, supporting their professional development and accreditation.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of technology, regulations, and industry best practices through continuous training and conference participation.
  • Manage client relationships, supporting senior colleagues for key accounts and independently managing smaller clients.
