The Overnight Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides support and supervision for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in their home during overnight hours. The role may be an awake overnight position or a resting overnight position. DSPs remain available to respond to individuals’ needs and help ensure their health, safety, and wellbeing. Awake overnight DSPs remain alert throughout the shift, provide direct support and personal care according to individual needs and care plans, monitor and respond to overnight needs, administer authorized medications and treatments, respond to emergencies, complete household tasks, and document services and observations. Resting overnight DSPs provide assistance during the active portion of the shift, respond to emergent situations, help individuals with morning routines and personal care, complete household cleaning and paperwork, and prepare the home for the day. Both roles require professional, respectful interactions and contribution to a positive team environment.
