The Direct Support Professional (DSP) plays a crucial role in assisting individuals with maximizing their strengths, interests, and abilities. This position upholds personal rights, displays patience and tolerance, and provides emotional support while building positive relationships. The DSP supports individuals in meeting personal goals that contribute to a high quality of life, engages in respectful communication using person-first language, and encourages socialization by facilitating activities that foster social capital and community connections. This role involves the overall supervision, protection, and care of individuals at all times, maintaining program guidelines, facilitating fire safety training, and identifying and escalating potential harm to self or others. Ensuring health, wellness, and safety through appropriate supervision and crisis management, while adhering to policies and regulations, is paramount. The DSP provides support in various settings, following individualized service and behavior support plans, utilizing support skills for individuals with diverse needs, and demonstrating OPWDD Core Competencies. They ensure the implementation of person-centered plans, including protective oversight (IPOPs), Behavior Support Plans (BSPs), Staff Action and/or Life Plans, understanding their intentions and goals. The DSP is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and organized therapeutic environment, utilizing safe handling procedures, and implementing infection control protocols. Assistance with daily living activities (ADLs), medication administration, skill development, advocacy, communication, and meal preparation are key functions. The role also involves transporting individuals, assisting with purchases, and safeguarding personal funds. Developing specialized clinical knowledge for specific needs (e.g., challenging behaviors, autism spectrum disorders, complex medical needs) and implementing Behavior Support Plans are essential. Data collection, observation, and reporting of behavioral changes to the clinical and leadership team are required. The DSP functions as a member of a highly effective team, providing feedback, communicating programmatic needs, and maintaining a solution-oriented approach. Completing and maintaining all necessary trainings and certifications, including specialized ones, is mandatory. Daily review and entry into communication logs and electronic health records, along with other required documentation for compliance and billing, are part of the daily operations. The DSP utilizes foundational teaching skills and understands behavior as communication, employing person-centered thinking to support positive interactions. Compliance with all regulatory requirements, including HIPAA, and reporting facility concerns are expected. Consultation with program leadership and other staff ensures streamlined care, and active participation in team meetings is required. The DSP must utilize approved YAI and OPWDD training techniques for challenging behaviors, ensuring the safety of all. Coverage for other staff, including at other locations, may be required. Participation in treatment plan development and operating a YAI vehicle for transportation may also be part of the role.
