The Direct Support Professional (DSP) role is crucial in assisting individuals to maximize their strengths, interests, and abilities. This position involves upholding personal rights, providing emotional support, and building positive relationships with patience and tolerance. The DSP supports individuals in meeting personal goals that contribute to a high quality of life, engages in respectful communication using person-first language, and encourages social interaction and community connections. Key responsibilities include ensuring the overall supervision, protection, and care of individuals, maintaining program guidelines, and facilitating training in fire safety. The role also involves identifying and escalating potential harm to self or others, ensuring health, wellness, and safety through appropriate supervision and crisis management, and adhering to all applicable policies, procedures, and regulations. The DSP provides support in various settings, following individualized service and behavior support plans, and utilizing support skills for individuals with diverse needs, demonstrating OPWDD Core Competencies. This includes implementing person-centered plans, Behavior Support Plans (BSPs), Staff Action and/or Life Plans, and maintaining a clean, safe, and organized therapeutic environment. The role requires utilizing safe handling procedures, implementing infection control protocols, and assisting with daily living activities such as personal care, hygiene, laundry, and housekeeping. Medication administration as prescribed, teaching skills, supporting self-advocacy, and assisting with communication and dispute resolution are also key functions. The DSP will also be involved in planning and preparing meals, transporting individuals to appointments and activities, and assisting with purchases and financial management. A developing understanding of specialized clinical knowledge for specific needs (e.g., adults, challenging behaviors, autism spectrum disorders, complex medical needs) is expected. The DSP will implement Behavior Support Plans, collect and summarize data on behavior, and report any changes to the clinical and leadership teams. Teamwork, feedback, and a solution-oriented approach are essential. The role requires completing and maintaining all necessary trainings and certifications, reviewing communication logs, and entering data into electronic health records. Accurate and timely completion of all required paperwork and documentation is necessary for compliance and billing. The DSP will use foundational teaching skills and understand behavior as communication, employing person-centered thinking to prevent escalation. Compliance with all regulatory requirements, including HIPAA, is mandatory. Reporting maintenance and safety concerns to the Program Supervisor is also a responsibility. Consultation with program leadership, clinical staff, and other direct support staff is expected to ensure quality care. The DSP will utilize approved YAI and OPWDD training techniques for challenging behaviors and may provide coverage at other locations or remain on shift to ensure minimum coverage. Participation in treatment plan development and operating a YAI vehicle for transportation may also be required.
