This role involves assisting individuals in maximizing their strengths, interests, and abilities, upholding their personal rights, and providing emotional support. The Direct Support Professional (DSP) will support people to meet personal goals, engage in respectful communication, and encourage social connections within the community. The position requires ensuring the overall supervision, protection, and care of individuals, maintaining program guidelines, and facilitating learning in fire safety. The DSP will also be responsible for managing health, wellness, and safety by providing appropriate supervision, managing crisis situations, and adhering to policies and regulations. This role supports individuals in various settings according to their individualized service and behavior support plans, utilizing support skills for people with varying needs and demonstrating OPWDD Core Competencies. The DSP ensures the implementation of person-centered plans, including protective oversight (IPOPs), Behavior Support Plans (BSPs), Staff Action and/or Life Plans. A clean, safe, and organized therapeutic environment is maintained, along with the utilization of safe handling procedures and infection control protocols. Specific tasks include providing personal care, assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs), administering medication as prescribed, teaching skills, supporting advocacy, assisting with communication, and facilitating ethical decision-making. Meal preparation according to dietary restrictions and transporting/escorting individuals for various activities are also key responsibilities. The role requires developing an understanding of specialized clinical knowledge for person-specific needs, implementing Behavior Support Plans, and collecting/summarizing data on observable behavior. The DSP will serve as a member of a team, providing feedback and communicating programmatic needs. Completion and maintenance of all necessary trainings and certifications are required. Daily review of communication logs and entry of events, progress notes, and services using an electronic health record is necessary. The DSP will also complete other required paperwork and documentation for compliance and billing. Foundational teaching skills and person-centered thinking to support positive interactions are essential. Compliance with all Federal, State, Local, and regulatory agency requirements, including HIPAA, is mandatory. Reporting maintenance and safety concerns to program leadership is also a responsibility. Consultation with program leadership, clinical staff, and other direct support staff ensures quality care. The DSP will utilize approved YAI and OPWDD training techniques for challenging behaviors and may participate in treatment plan development. For certain assignments, operating a YAI vehicle to transport individuals may be required. Performs all other duties as assigned.
