This role involves assisting individuals in maximizing their strengths, interests, and abilities, upholding their personal rights, and providing emotional support. The Direct Support Professional (DSP) supports people to meet personal goals, engages in respectful communication, and encourages social connections within the community. Key responsibilities include the overall supervision, protection, and care of individuals, ensuring their health, wellness, and safety by managing crisis situations and adhering to policies. The DSP provides support in various settings according to individualized service and behavior support plans, utilizing core competencies. They ensure the implementation of person-centered plans, maintain a clean and safe therapeutic environment, and utilize safe handling procedures and infection control protocols. Specific tasks include assisting with personal care, ADLs, medication administration, teaching skills, communication support, meal preparation, and transportation. The role also involves understanding specialized clinical knowledge, implementing behavior support plans, collecting data, and reporting changes in behavior. The DSP is a team member, completing necessary trainings and certifications, maintaining documentation in electronic health records, and using teaching skills to support positive interactions. They comply with regulatory requirements like HIPAA and report maintenance concerns. Collaboration with leadership and clinical staff is essential for quality care, and participation in team meetings is expected. The DSP utilizes approved training techniques for challenging behaviors and may provide coverage at other locations or assist in treatment plan development. For certain assignments, operating a YAI vehicle to transport individuals may be required.
