This role involves providing direct support to individuals to help them maximize their strengths, interests, and abilities. The Direct Support Professional (DSP) upholds personal rights, displays patience and tolerance, and offers emotional support while building positive relationships. The position focuses on supporting individuals to meet personal goals, engaging in respectful communication using person-first language, and encouraging social connections within the community. The DSP is responsible for the overall supervision, protection, and care of individuals at all times, maintaining program guidelines, facilitating fire safety training, and escalating any signs of potential harm to self or others. Ensuring health, wellness, and safety involves appropriate supervision, managing crisis situations, and adhering to policies and procedures. Support is provided in various settings according to individualized service and behavior support plans, utilizing skills for individuals with diverse needs and demonstrating OPWDD Core Competencies. The role requires ensuring the implementation of person-centered plans, including protective oversight (IPOPs), Behavior Support Plans (BSPs), Staff Action and/or Life Plans, and understanding their intentions. Maintaining a clean, safe, and organized therapeutic environment, utilizing safe handling procedures, and implementing infection control protocols are also key responsibilities. Specific tasks include assisting with personal care, ADLs, medication administration, teaching skills, advocacy, communication support, meal preparation, and transportation. The DSP will develop an understanding of specialized clinical knowledge for specific needs such as autism spectrum disorders and complex medical needs, and implement Behavior Support Plans as written by a Behavior Intervention Specialist. Data collection, recording, and summarization of individual behavior are required, along with reporting any changes in behavior to the clinical and/or leadership team. The DSP will be a member of a team, providing feedback, communicating programmatic needs, and maintaining a solution-oriented approach. Completing and maintaining all necessary trainings and certifications, reviewing communication logs, and completing required paperwork and documentation accurately and within timeframes are essential. The role utilizes foundational teaching skills and understands behavior as communication. Compliance with all regulatory agency requirements, including HIPAA, is mandatory. Reporting maintenance and safety concerns to program leadership is also a responsibility. Consultation with program leadership, clinical staff, and other direct support staff ensures quality care. The DSP will utilize approved YAI and OPWDD training techniques for challenging behaviors and may provide coverage for other staff, potentially at different locations. Participation in treatment plan development and operating a YAI motor vehicle may be required for certain assignments.
